Cannot Burn CD/DVD via Remote Desktop

Hi all,

I'm trying to burn a file on my Laptop running Windows Vista Home Premium x86 from my work.

I can login fine and but when I click on Nero I get the message "If you are running Nero burning software via Windows Remote Login, you might not be able to access your drives for burning. This is a security restriction from Windows".

And sure enough, I can't burn. I have also tried WMP11 and it gives a similar error.

Obviously there is a security restriction in place, is there any way to change this (assume it has something to do with Policies) so that I can burn via Remote Desktop.

Haven't come across it myself but a google came up with this :

Start Group Policy Editor - Go to the Start menu and type in, gpedit.msc
In the left pane of Group Policy Editor, navigate to Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> System -> Removable Storage Access.
In the right pane of Group Policy Editor, change the value of the Setting, All Removable Storage: Allow direct access in remote sessions, to Enabled.
Exit Group Policy Editor and you should be able to burn a DVD over Remote Desktop now

Thanks for the help, i'm sure this would normally work if you were using Vista Ultimate but gpedit.msc doesn't work in Vista Home Premium (via the run command), any other ideas?

Ahh, then if you're feeling brave you can change it in the registry.

You can find the "Group Policy Settings Reference Windows Vista" on Microsoft's site.

I think you want line 2018

Or there's an alternative suggestion here

Thanks for all the info guys, changing registry key did the trick

I'm seriously considering just upgrading to Vista Ultimate x86 anyway (can get a legit DVD through work), but that's for another thread
