Recently when having about 5 or 6 tabs open in Firefox, for unknown and random reasons the damn thing will grind to a snails pace and take up to 90+% of the CPU and over 125MB of memory. The PC is almost unusable.

It's a bloody web browser FGS! Seriously ****** off with it ATM.

The about:config page within Firefox holds the answer to reducing memory usage, there are numerous settings that can be tweaked to help, it's a good idea to Google this and read a little about the different settings.

Has a bit about it, I used to use the config.trim_on_minimize setting to help with my old computer, it really helped.

Also found a reference to Adobe Acrobat having some impact as well. So updated the reader software and made Firefox look to the reader rather than the full blown Acrobat version.

IIRC FF has always had a major memory leak problem. Not sure if this is fixed in FF3 builds.

FF3 will be solving the leakages, that's one of the main points of call with the development as far as I know.

I'm now wondering if I've been experiencing the same as reported here:

I have the same problem and everytime firefox locks up there is an O2 banner ad at the right hand side of the screen...

have to control+alt+delete to shutdown firefox and restart.

bit of a pain really.

   I pay £££'s each month for adverts to appear here !

I can understand why you block them though as some are bit too much.

My ad is a simple static gif that is only a few kb, not one of the cpu intensive ones, not that you will have seen it.....

I've found the Macromedia/Adobe Flash plugin for Firefox to be very inefficient, compared to the Internet Explorer version. I don't notice it so much on my dual-core PCs, but my old laptop really struggles (i.e. 100% CPU usage) when it's asked to render a page containing Flash in Firefox. IE flies through it with considerably lower CPU usage.

My solution is to install the FlashBlock add-in for Firefox. That way, only when I choose to view the Flash elements will I be forced to endure the extreme slowdown. And yes, the O2 flash advert on the forum here does it too.

If only Opera Browser worked correctly with Yahoo Mail. It's a shame. I know some people despise ads, but I have no problems with them, as long as they're unintrusive. Flash ads that kill the PC and make viewing sites impossible leave no choice BUT to block them.

<rant>The old Animated GIF style ads are fine - look at Scan's advert on this forum - no problems with it at all, and a good company who deserve the custom. Flash is one thing I wish would disappear from all sites unless it's absolutely necessary to use it. I've been to sites built entirely in Flash and then gone elsewhere because they're so annoying.</rant>

[MOD comment by mmahmed - link removed]

Er, that is explicitly forbidden by the forum rules because of the comment by Mark.

Rule #14 (Members may not....)

Use advert blocking software or plugins to block the advertising at AVForums. Click here (http://www.avforums.com/forums/view_advertising_policy.htm) to read more about our policy regarding the use of advertising.

If you use ad blocking software you may be banned.
