Flash Card Reader Causing Vista To Pause at Bootup

I’ve just built my new system based on the Gigabyte GA-MA78GM-S2M motherboard and using Vista 64 as the OS. When I plugged in a generic USB flash card reader there is at least a 2 minute pause at the point where the Vista boot graphic appears. Unplug it, no pause.

Why is this happening and how do I fix it?

Thanks,
Dave.

Re: Flash Card Reader Causing Vista To Pause at Bootup

I had a similar issue a few years back on XP with my first USB broadband modem. Unplugging the modem and the PC booted fine, with it plugged in it just hung at the XP splash screen.
To resolve this I changed the USB cable and all worked fine from then on. It may just be a dodgy USB cable causing the pause - it was for me.

Mark.

Thanks for the reply.

Interesting. I did use the same reader with a different motherboard and XP without any problem.

Does your system actually boot OK after the 2 minutes pause?

My Vista 32 did the same when I popped in a USB flash drive (configured for ReadyBoost), but the system would hang and not boot at all until I removed the flash drive. What happened was that for some mysterious reason the Bios had changed the Boot Priority sequence to USB first and HDD second..... so I changed the settings in the Bios and now boots ok even with the flash drive in.

Re: Flash Card Reader Causing Vista To Pause at Bootup

I just solved it by plugging in the usb cable of the card reader into a different header on the motherboard - USB2 instead of USB1.
