Affordable equivalent to MK THX... Jamo D 6?

My mate is looking to build a home cinema and has asked my advise on what speakers to demo, he has already picked up an Onkyo TX-SR875, Panasonic DMP-BD30, projector and screen. He has £1500 to spend.

He wants speakers that are purely for home cinema and has hinted to wanting THX speakers to ensure they are tuned for movies, but I have hinted they aren't cheap!

By what I have listened to, MK is the best home cinema speaker manufacturer, but their cheapest THX speakers, LCR750THXs at £350 each, work out too expensive.

Jamo have one range, D 6, that seems to tick all the boxes and are more affordable, at only £200 each. They sell them at AV-Sales as a 7.1 package and are pretty expensive, but I reckon losing the 7.1 to 5.1 and 'downgrading' the sub to a BK Monolith will keep the budget together

The reviews seem excellent, but they are on their website

I was thinking if they are as good as the reviews say then three front D 6LCR and two rear D 6SUR plus a BK Monolith at £1400ish seem a bargain for a THX Ultra package.

How would the Jamos compare to the NON-THX Arcam Muso package, SVS SB12 package or even a mix MK package of three front M7s with two rear M5s and a BK Monolith?

Re: Affordable equivalent to MK THX... Jamo D 6?

THX is only really of any benefit if the amplifier itself is THX, and will be listened to at reference levels, which is unlikely. Anywhere near a sensible listening level and THX willl be giving you a duller sound. I'd also say that THX only really has full benefit when being used in a dedicated home theatre install.

Therefore, the speakers don't really need to be THX. THX is just a set of specifications which a speaker needs to meet, but not all manufacturers put all of their speakers forward for this classification. Chances are, the M7 package from Miller & Kreisel will actually meet those specs, but as I've said, the majority of people won't be playing that sort of package at reference levels. All of M&K's speakers are produced purely for movie soundtracks, whether THX or not.

The Jamo may be a good package at it's price point, but seeing as the M&K's compare to much more expensive speakers, I don't think they'll be worrying the M&K's at almost half their price. Having seen some Jamo home cinema speakers before, I can't say I was particularly struck on their build quality/finish. Also, M&K packages are cheaper if you're sticking to direct firing speakers for the rears, but their unique Tripole speakers are one of the differences that set them apart from other speaker packages.

Other lifestyle type speaker packages just won't be anywhere near them when it comes to a genuine movie experience as they're just not designed for the job. Best to have a listen for yourself though, and make sure you get an unbiased demonstration.

Regards
David

Have anyone heard them though??

The reviews are actually really good i.e. best for sound etc.

They seem to look like MP150s or is that the THX look.
