PS3 or BlueRay standalone player?

Not sure about this one and would appreciate some help. I'm getting a Panny Pz70 delivered next week and was looking in to BlueRay players....can a PS3 do everything that a standalone blueray player can?

Would it be wise just to buy a PS3 over a standalone player?

Any help appreciated, thanks

Hi AKM.
If your not fussed over sending HD audio bitstream (PS3 decodes it) then the PS3 will do everything that a standalone can do plus a ton of other stuff!
Seriously recommended.
All the best.

Re: PS3 or BlueRay standalone player?

If you are buying a Bluray player right now there is no better player than the PS3.

Standalones arent much cheaper and they do sod all compared to the PS3.

You can load and eject half a dozen discs on the PS3 in the time it takes for the standalone tray to open.

Unless a games console is your antichrist you should forget any standalones until at least the end of the year and give them a chance to catch up

Hi burtonpark.
I have the 60gb and it's quiet with BD playback..............honest.
With the 40gb PS3 fan noise should be a non-issue with Blu-ray.
All the best.

Re: PS3 or BlueRay standalone player?

Ive had a PS3 running Bluray duties to my 50" PZ plasma for the last six months.

Last week my BD30 turned up.

After watching around six films on the BD30 there is no doubt in my mind that it offers both superior audio as well as video compared to the PS3.

The image is more vibrant (without looking unnatural) and everything somehow appears as though it has more depth to it. The audio seems more spacious, if that makes any sense.

Finally, its great to get to the quieter parts of the movie without the constant drone of the PS3 fan interfering with the viewing experience.

Overall, I'd highly recommend the BD30 - almost a bargain for what it costs and what its capable of.

Only downside that I can so far come up with is that it appears a little slower than the PS3 for actually switching on and being at the DVD main menu screen - this however is marginal and still seems like a Ferrari compared to my Toshiba EP35 HD DVD player!!!

My 40gb is virtually silent.

Although the jet-engine in my Sky HD box may be drowing this out.

Hi AKM.
Try and get a demo and see for yourself.
I had the BD30 on loan for a week and saw no improvement over the PS3 with BD PQ on my set-up.
Cheers.

Mine is a 60gb one and to both myself and the missus is very noticeably noisier than the BD30.

Dont get me wrong - I think for a jack of all trades bit of AV kit, the PS3 is great.
