My son is using my old pc now, Windows XP pro, IE 6, he just uses it for the Kids sites such as BBC, Cbbc, Runescape etc, the machine ran fine for me for a few years.

Just recently when he visits the kids sites, IE6 was throwing up an error, then reporting the fault, thus closing down the browser, this has become very frequent, almost each time he tries to use any of his regular sites afer a minute or so.

I couldn't really see what the problem was, so as he suggested that he used IE7 at school, I thought I would update the browser to see if this rectified the problem.

IE 7 installed fine, but it still brings up error's especially in the BBC sites, I tried some of my own type of sites & these were fine, most curious.

Has anyone found diffuculty with the kids sites especially the BBC with IE 6 / 7?

Any advice?

Oh he also uses Firefox which in the whole is OK, but some sites don't like it or don't display properly so Internet Explorer is still required to function.

Considering the PC may be a a few years old it maybe in need of a good old reformat that XP seems to need after a few years of operation. Unfortunately this isn't always possible.

Many websites nowadays use Java and Adobe Flash Player based environments to operate correctly. I would make sure that you have the latest versions of both IE add in's. A knackered installation of either one of these environments would cause IE to crash when it tries to activate the add in.

To do this:

Go to www.java.com (http://www.java.com) and click on the 'Free Download' link and follow the on screen instructions.

Go to www.adobe.com (http://www.adobe.com) and click on the 'Adobe Flash Player' link and follow the on screen instructions.

It's worth a go!

Also try Firefox - it's currently a safer browser.

Delete all temporary internet files and cookies, just in case there's something corrupt there causing problems.

Make sure you've installed the latest versions of Java, Flash, Shockwave, etc. and aren't using out of date versions, some of the sites in question may make use of these.

Also, try temporarily changing the security settings in IE to Low and see if this makes a difference.

Also try disabling or stopping any advert removing software you might have (ie popups blockers, like ad muncher). Might wanna take a peek at the BHOs and ActiveX controls list aswell.

This seems to have done the job, Thanks

I kind of thought that by installing IE7 that these would also be updated, but that would be too simple.

Also updated Firefox, so all should be well for a while.
