View Full Version : Photo of freesat SD & HD receivers in comet from the 22nd April
Most comet stores will have the grundig SD & HD receivers in stock from the 22nd of April i have put one on order at my local store and am picking it up on the 22nd of April,
Also when i went in to comet they did not have a clue what i was talking about it was not untill i made them check on their pc and they said they had them due in on the 22nd and they said they would put one away for me
You can see prices and photos of the receivers here
HD http://www.comet.co.uk/shopcomet/product/444332/GRUNDIG-GUFSATHD
SD http://www.comet.co.uk/shopcomet/product/444324/GRUNDIG-GUFSAT01
As usual Comet do not seem to have a clue as to what they are selling. The accessories seem to include energy saving plugs, but make no mention of the requirement of a satellite dish and fittings !!!!

According to Comets specs this does not have a digital tuner
My brother in law works for Argos at one of their distribution centres at a place called Magna park in Leicestershire and he has advised that they recieved a delivery of Freesat recievers last night Fri 18/04/08 but the pallet has note to say not to be picked for orders until 28/04/08 so Argos should have them shortly as well.

Although I'm not really a fan of the high street stores I want to step in and defend Comet, at least the Blackpool retail park store anyway!
The guy in there was very helpful, I must have spent 20mins discussing the pros and cons of various HDD recorders and he then told me about the imminent launch of Freesat, although I was already aware of Freesat it was honest of him to warn me off 'wasting' money on a Freeview HDD recorder and recommend waiting for the Freesat launch.
He also told me that by the end of the year there would be HD TV's with integrated Freesat in the store.
It does seem crazy that the Freesat recorders on the Comet site don't include any mention of dishes though.

Correct me if I'm wrong but those Grundig boxes on the Comet site aren't recorders but simple receivers, the PVR boxes are coming later aren't they (June/July?)

I get 28/4/08 (SD) and 3/5/08 (HD). Perhaps it depends on where you live. Not that I'm going to buy online with a branch of Comet 10 minutes away. I'll pop in later and enquire.

HI all I also noticed on the comet web site thier is no mention of a hdmi conection on the Grundig receivers.

Given the price they are simply receivers.

Yeah, sorry, I was reading receivers but thinking recorders.
Surely any Freesat receiver/recorder will have HDMI output? otherwise what benefit will freesat offer over SD Freeview? apart from possibly better signal/coverage.
This leads me on to another good reason for choosing Freesat, if your existing aerial is old and would need replacing to get a decent Freeview signal then it would make more sense to put the cost of a new aerial (£100-£150?) towards a Freesat package.

From what I'm reading do I take that with these new boxes for Freesat HD I'll still need my old sky digibox to receive SD channels like bbc1, 2, itv, c4 and c5?
Remember to take a note of the model numbers and make them check on their store pc when stock is due in store

No, the Freesat HD boxes will also receive all the SD channels. :)

HD receivers/recorders will have HDMI I would expect.
However SD receivers/recorders I would expect to have, at least initially, just an RGB SCART output as their highest quality output. Putting an HDMI output on an SD only receiver may cause more confusion - and the extra cost of an HDMI connection on a low-cost receiver is probably counterproductive.
otherwise what benefit will freesat offer over SD Freeview? apart from possibly better signal/coverage.
Better coverage - there are large chunks of the UK who still can't get Freeview - and possibly greater channel choice, as well as better interactive facilities - like the Wimbledon, Golf and Olympics multiscreens - where you get far more video feeds than on Freeview.
This leads me on to another good reason for choosing Freesat, if your existing aerial is old and would need replacing to get a decent Freeview signal then it would make more sense to put the cost of a new aerial (£100-£150?) towards a Freesat package.
Yep - though it is a balancing act. Freeview doesn't usually disappear in heavy rain - DSat often does...

The answer to rain fade is to install a larger dish than the norm for your location to give extra rain fade margin.

I have contacted Comet head office and my local branch all negative.
Can you post which branch you are to obtain your unit from.
If you already have it how is it, and the price.
Thanks
I got my one from Bristol just go in to a comet store and ask them if they got stock yet in their regional distribution center like i did and if they have they can get one in store or to your home in less than 24 hours,
All comet shops can check the distribution center stock on the in store computer system,
They receiver is good it makes the sky digital receiver look rubbish and way out of date i paid £149 for the grundig gufsatHD, I also have a sky HD receiver and if i compare pic quality on say BBC HD the grundig is much better.
Just make sure you go in to comet and ask them to check stock of gufsatHD or gufsat01 no point in phoning about and no one knows nothing about it, Like in comet the guy said to me they just get stock in and chuck it on the shelves and sell it that is it,

From reading other forums, I think it's just the one, BBC HD. I assume Luxe HD haven't stumped up the big cash required for an EPG slot.

It's not really a problem from discussing things, but when things go wrong with this company.
It's been known for a long time, they defend each other and even the Head Office doesn't act on matters.
I would always ask a few stores, and not one retailer so you know what you are being told is correct.

rd100 was on the digitalspy forums a few months ago claiming to work for Aquiva and to have thus been shown working EPGs and STBs in boxes in warehouses ready to go (BUT from manufacturers not even involved in Freesat!)
All VERY plausible at the time but total fantasy in hindsight!

Yes !!!
But you will only get the Free To Air (FTA) channels, the additional (Sky) Free To View (FTV) channels won't be receivable initially and the subscription channels will never be available unless the freesat box specifications are changed in the future to allow CAMs etc.

As Silas said, YES, you can use all of your existing Sky Dish/LNB/Cabling setup.
The freesat channels are exactly the same (FTA) channels as used by Sky. No difference at all.
Because of this you might want to rethink whether you actually need to purchase a freesat box. If you already have a Sky STB then you can stop paying subscriptions and still get all the same channels as freeview and get the extra FTV ones as well (Freesat from Sky). If your existing Sky receiver is either Sky+ or Sky HD then you will "lose" the Sky+ PVR functionality though.

Your Sky+ will work as a non PVR SD freesat box without a sub and even get the FTV channels in addition (which the BBC freesat box won't do) with an expired sub card or Freesat card.

Graham. Thanks for your replies snaithg and others, much appreciated. I have Freeview PVRs and a non-subscription expired card basic Sky box. I'm happy with Freeview but my main interest in Freesat is economical access to HD content and hopefully a more reliable and maybe more functional PVR than those currently available for Freeview. I guess it will be some time before I will know if the latter are achievable. I will be following this forum with interest.

You should be able to see freesat HD (Non PVR) boxes from about the 6th May (possibly sooner). But you will probably need to wait until about July (ish) for HD PVR's to become available for your comparison.

Look what I found in Comet today......
Looks similar in size to a normal Freeview box, and looked rather smart in black.
Despite having the box on the shelf with it's product card, there were no actual boxes stacked underneath so don't know whether they had sold out or this one had simply been put out by mistake.
There was absolutely no other literature around to help educate consumers on what this Freesat box actually did.
Thats the box indeed, put out by accident i have no doubt. Try buying it

Put out by mistake! Freesat seem to want the greatest possible launch on 6th May - so Comets around the country have been banned from selling any stock - and should have been told to have none on display either.
It sounds like Argos will be next in line to have Freesat read them the riot act about having no web-presence AND no stock until launch day!
