Jailbreaking questions

hi guys

well iv come to the decision i want to jailbreak my iphone - my understanding is jailbreaking just lets you use 3rd party apps and doesnt unlock it, is this correct?

anyway do i need to back up contacs etc through itunes?

also will i still be able to sync my music and videos etc through itunes?

any help will be greatly appreciated guys

me again, if im unlocking a handset for a friend (he is on 02)

will i need to unlock it or just jailbreak it?

and ifg im unlocking it, do i need to put his sim in or the one that came with the iphone?

I have never had an iphone and will get one shortly after 11/07/2008.

I would like to know a few things about jailbreaking.

Will it void the warranty if I jailbreak an iphone shortly after getting it on an o2 contract?
Will I encounter many problems afterwards (Will iTunes recognise that it has been tampered with?)
Will it prevent me from downloading firmware updates in the future?
From reading posts on these forums, what percentage of people do you reckon are happy that the performed a jailbreak?Thanks
