I had exactly the same problem once, the instructions on this link cured it.

You've got a corrupt registry. Follow the instruction in the above link to fix it. Personally, I would just format and clean install.

Re: windows\system32\config\system files missing

Thanks nburg01 and Singh400 no joy as after the welcome screen I can only type 1 letter and then nothing if I hit enter I get a new line but can only type again 1 letter so have give up. After about 5 turn offs windows does start up and I can get into my files, if I turn it off I can still reboot no problems Its when I turn it on again the next day I have go through turning off and on to get windows to boot? As for a clean install this is what I did on a different HD when I first came across this problem but I have the same problem on 2 different HDs?
any thoughts on that

Re: windows\system32\config\system files missing

Please Please Please can someone point me in the right direction on this problem
I Tried with a used HD with some info on it which I didn't need and did a clean install went through the full procedure and eveything went well and now have just windows on it added some programs which I wanted and turn it off a few times everything OK. Turn on the next day and though and behold I'm back to square one FILES MISSING DO A REPAIR. It must be something a bit deeper maybe to do with BIOS? Can anyone help THANK YOU

Update: I ran sfc /scannow and it started to look for an older version of WinXP other than the one I have installed with the clean install. How do I clean the HD COMPLETE to install this newer version Thank You
