View Full Version : A few iPhone questions I need answering...

Sorry for the new thread guys, but I got a few questions and it'll take ages to find the answers...

So, you can get the 8gb iPhone for £169 from o2 and CPW. I thought this was contract only, but I've been told you can buy it without a contract?

I have a contract with Vodafone, and just upgraded to a N95 8GB. Can I take the sim out, and put it into the iPhone once it's unlocked? I heard something about different sim cards?

If I jailbreak the phone, and unlock it -- what won't I be able to do, that o2 contract users can?

Could you summarize the situation briefly rather than me having to read thousands of pages? Thanks button at the ready!

I've got 14 days to be able to return my N95 8GB, so would you do that, or keep the N95 8GB so you can have it as a spare/sell it?

Can someone run through exactly what I'd need to do breifly to have a iPhone on my current Vodafone contract? Buy the iPhone for £169, jailbreak it and unlock it using ZiPhone, and then bung my normal sim in...? Is that correct?

Cheers guys.

Guys, quick question, how do I get past activating it with o2? Do I just ZiPhone straight away, or do I need to do something else?

All done!

Now on a 1.1.4, jailbroken, using ZiPhone -- Vodafone sim in and working 100%...

Absolutely chuffed...

Are you on XP or Vista ?

Vista.

Just plug it into iTunes, and it'll ask you to activate with o2. Leave it.

Run ZiPhone, click "Prepare to Update" and restore the firmware to 1.1.4... and then run "Do It All" on ZiPhone -- done!

It'll work fine if it's a normal standard sized sim.

Can I kind of butt in here, as I'm hoping that my ordered one will be in at O2 (they had sold out when I went in there)

This is on behalf of a friend who I will (hopefully) be getting this for and unlocking for her.....BUT

To be quite frank I am nervous. I have read stories of ziphone bricking Iphones. Is it a reliable procedure? She wants to use her existing T Mobile SIM in it and have access to the unlimited data package.

T0rNaDo
16-04-2008, 4:47 PM
you wont get the unlimited data pack unless you sign up the £35 contract with 02.

the 600 mins,500 txts and unlimited data.

if you put the T mobile simm in the iphone then your get what ever mins/txts and data you have with the t mobile simm.

Gibb
16-04-2008, 4:50 PM
Thats what I meant. Her T Mobile contract is unlimited data. Sorry I didn't make that clear.

Another question, sorry OP hope you don't mind.

If the phone is unlocked can you still get software updates? Or can Apple tell what you have done when you plug it into the PC.

T0rNaDo
16-04-2008, 4:53 PM
well if that is part of her package with t mobile then i would imagine yes.

yes but when new firmware comes out. you then have to wait for the programs that will unlock and jailbreak that version....

So...final annoying question. I know there's never a 100% guarantee but is Ziphone pretty safe to use? Don't want to pass her a brick for her money.....

I unlocked mine using Ziphone running Vista. The irony of using such a heavily DRM'ed Microsoft OS to strip the Apple DRM off the phone was just delicious!

Also, if you use an O2 PAYG SIM in it, you won't be able to access the web on it - as O2 block GPRS and EDGE access on PAYG. I found this to my cost (£10 for a SIM and minimum topup) last week.

I ended up getting the £25 per month Simplicity contract with O2 - something like 600 minutes and loads of texts a month - but most importantly for me - a free web bolt-on, which allows me unlimited (ish) GPRS / EDGE access for web browsing, email, Google maps, etc.

Well chuffed with it. And not at all annoyed that O2 and CPW have lopped a £100 off the price of the phone less than a month after I bought it. No. Not at all. <grinds teeth>

:thumbsdowI've got a O2 payg sim which i was going to use - do i need to buy another payg from another company (if so which company)as I def don't want any contract malarkey.

Thanks

Isn't it better to use iLiberty+ than ziphone? I thought ziphone was more prone to problems and hardcoded a mac address which prevents it working on a wi-fi network that another unlocked iphone is on? See here:-

http://www.hackint0sh.org/forum/showthread.php?t=35423

for info about iliberty+

and here to get it:-

Argggggggggh :)

What to do, what to do????!!!!!

Most people seem to be happy with ziphone even CNET recommend it. So what exactly have the problems been?

Yay! Went very smoothly - OS Vista - ZiPhone 3.0 - didn't need to update my iPhone it was on 1.1.4 already.
I only needed to change - Settings, General, Network, Edge - then next to APN I typed: "internet" (leaving the other two fields blank) - so I can now access maps and safari - maybe others? (allbeit slowly), as I can't get edge on Vodafone (or at least don't know how to!) - no doubt I'm paying data charges mind you!
- only thing is I can't use YouTube
Still, I can connect to my wi-fi for free and get YouTube then !

Can we just clear something up here for the record from someone who has been involved in unlocking the iphone since they were first released.

Ziphone works fine in the majority of cases BUT there have been some problems for some people and if you get problems it is not easy to get them fixed. If you unlock with ziphone you CANNOT get the phone back to its OOTB state.

ILiberty+ seems to be a bit more stable but the same as Ziphone, if you do have problems they arent easy to fix.

Pwnage is the best bet as all unlocking is done on the firmware before it is loaded to your phone, and fully reversible, but not yet out for Windows.

The is risk to ALL unlocking procedures, do at your own risk.

The Pwnage windows beta is out now apparently

www.winpwn.com

Don't think it does the unlocking bit at the moment and to be honest I'd hold off using it until some other Guinea pigs have tried it!

Avoid the Beta version of winpwn unless you are very confident that you know what you are doing - it is Beta for a reason and has a disclaimer that it is still quite buggy and may brick your phone.

As Andy says the unlocking fuction is disabled so until that is sorted its pretty useless for most people anyway.

Hi...i've just bought an iPhone  but my contract with another network runs out in a couple of months. If i unlock with pwnage to use now and as i understand you can restore to OOB state, can i then activate with BT to go on their contract or is there a time limit in which you have to sign up\activate?

TIA
