Interesting, there was a time when Fedora was all that would run on my laptop. That was back in the Fedora Core 5 days.

Ubuntu has served me well in terms of hardware but I am always trying out the alternatives. The Beta is on the mirrors now and I am downloading it as I type - 15 minutes to go apparently!! Lets have a wee look......

They're going to have it start earlier in the boot process which will be nice!

As a new Linux user it took me some time to work out why I couldn't mount a remote NFS drive at startup. I realised it was because it was trying to mount before networking had started but didn't know why...

Stopping "NetworkManager" running at S98 and starting "network" at S10 fixed the problem (as you'd expect)

Anyone considering switching to Linux should consider this distro. As I said previously, I have used Fedora in the past but have been a die-hard Ubuntu user for about 3 years now.

Anyway, I installed the beta of Fedora 9 last night and I must say I am impressed. Once installed and updated (449 updates later) the system booted perfectly, all the hardware seems to work out of the box, just the card reader to test. The display is crisp and much sharper than Ubuntu and the overall feel of the Gnome Desktop is just more polished and refined. It is on a par for quality with openSUSE.

Highly recommended - ubuntu better watch out.

Might give this a download and stick it in a VBox. I'm new to linux, Ubuntu being my only OS I've tried, but it can't do any harm to play with some others :)

Yup, but have they made adding the proprietry stuff a breeze? I mean ubuntu picked up my atheros chipset wireless and it just works - obviously told me it was restricted, but it does it. Mp3 playback, dvd playback until they make that real simple Ubuntu will stay on top - imo.

Well, I downloaded the full DVD of this one, then wished that I hadn't bothered. No nVidia driver support, the usual gnome lock-ins, I couldn't get the LiveUSB to work on my new 4Gb stick either .
Back to Kubuntu.

Come on, it's not so bad.... I'm sitting here with a full FC9 install, ATI drivers and all the compiz stuff you could ever want. Took a bit of fiddling but the info's all there on the Fedora site if you want it (and for nVidia too).....

Oh, I know it's doable, but it involves rolling back the x server to the old version (for nVidia anyway, not sure about ATI) and I'd rather wait for the drivers to catch up.

Just the same for ATI too.....

I tried both the KDE and Gnome versions. The KDE version just wouldn't install properly, so I gave up with it. The gnome version installed ok but I couldn't see any reason to move to it from Ubuntu. I guess if you are already running Fedora then it is a useful upgrade. :)
