Between The Buried And Me - Colors
I dont know, I have almost given up describing some of the music I listen to and this album typifies that.
Trying my very best, this is a dense, heavy album. Like Dream Theater meets Slayer meets Dillinger Escape Plan. For those who dont like 'roaring' vocals this might be a struggle, though they really dont intrude quite as much as some albums and in some places the singing is incredibly beautiful (maybe that is because of the contrast). There are Opeth moments to, bits of very pretty acoustic guitar forming respite before the crushing riffs, mixed with the twists and turns of musicians who can adjust every note and tempo like seasoned Jazz musicians.
The musicianship is inspiring, the bone crushing down tuned guitars liquifying solid objects, an underpinning of fuzz a' la My Bloody Valentine and suddenly cutting through the mix is some incredibly beautiful classical piece, the sort of thing that bands like Yes mastered, but instead of being prominent these are mixed in with the rest and it leaves your brain to decipher the dense layers. There is that jazz influence like King Crimson, fast, with ever changing time signatures that makes you dizzy.
Then there are the drums.......... there are times that make me jump, the sort of thing that Bonham did in Led Zeppelin with his trade mark triplets goes up a step, its so fast and pure in these tiny, fast fills that its almost like a high speed 20mm cannon. If your hifi has the guts for it, then it certainly makes you sit up. This is a drummer that uses blast beats to such good effect it is if a missile has landed in your front room. Wicked.
A lot of influences are piled up in this. Is it prog?metal?doom?thrash?black?symphonic?indie?rock? I really struggle to fit it into any and all. There is something of Mastodon stylee in here, but with a far more mature sound, maybe. More relaxed maybe.
Anyway, Im sure if you like how that all sounded you have made your mind up around about now

This gets better and better. There is even Pink Floyd in this, reminds me in parts of the first floyd album. This lot are just fat to talented.

They're an excellent band. Never thought I'd see a thread about them on here

Funny you should say that. At one time the music forum was a real hotbed of activity, loads of metal and enormous arguments There was a split of sorts with some members disgruntled with something or other (no idea what), they went off and joined another forum, which, for a while was relatively lively, then just deteriorated into the......whats your top ten blah blah
So, if you want to fire it all up again feel free. I prefered the times of lively discussions and bannings was much fun and frolics

Re: Between The Buried And Me - Colors
Although I have never heard of them or their music, I think they are absolute rubbish. A poor imitation of a cross between Rick Astley and Motothead.
They would not get in my top 10 list.

Re: Between The Buried And Me - Colors
Just listened to snippets on iTunes, I think I might be buying this album, thanks for the heads-up
Edit - just looked on Amazon and it's £10.48, it's cheaper at Play but not in stock. Anywhere else where it might be cheaper ? I've never known iTunes to be this much cheaper than Amazon before.

Re: Between The Buried And Me - Colors
Decided to give this album a listen after seeing this thread. Ive only heard the first few tracks but ,to be honest,im not blown away. The mix of melody and hard, black metal esque, riffs are good but the tracks ive heard just don't seem to be that creative. I think im too used to the brilliance of Opeth and Tool but then again i could just be narrow minded
For anyone else looking for a prog/hard rock/melodic fix id recommend Porcupine Tree, even though they have been around for years i only just got round to listening to there latest album a week ago and it is outstanding

As a Tool fanboy Very little sounds like Tool and I wasn't blown away when I first heard them. Opeth I can take or leave. There is something very creative about BTBAM and its not just in the nature of the compositions, there is something visceral in the delivery a passion that comes across which is missing these days. Intrestingly I notice that Mike portnoy of DT is promoting them as part of a US tour........DT,BTBAM,Opeth and Three.......not coming to the UK soon

Re: Between The Buried And Me - Colors
Does anyone know if Play reorder CDs if they are showing as out of stock ? This is £5.99 at Play but I'm not sure if it's worth me ordering it from there and waiting for them to get stock in.
I'm not going to pay £10.48 from Amazon !

Gil Sharone........what a drummer No doubt about it, he will be one of the top drummers in the next few years, maybe even a Bozzio, Lang, Colaiuta or Weckl.

Re: Between The Buried And Me - Colors
Keep meaning to give these guys a listen. Not entirely convinced the vocals will do it for me. I'm getting a little tired of the endless amounts of bands who mix clean vocals with death metal grunts and think that is enough. But BTBAM keep getting a good reaction from people, so might have to have a look
Being a borderline obsessive Mastodon fan, I am always on the look out for new interesting music. I would highly recommend any of the following
Baroness - The Red Album. For fans of Mastodon, 'The Red Album' is immense
The Freezing Fog - not well known at all, but their album 'March to Victory' is incredible, check out their site or Myspace
Taint - gaining popularity, and rightly so. This is what metalcore should sound like - a mix of metal and punk. Think Helmet covering Fugazi and Mudhoney
The Sword - 2nd album is a blinder
High On Fire - one described as Slayer mixed with Motorhead. That will do nicely.

Nice list: I really like Mastodon but thought they sucked big time when I saw them at Rock City (it was probably just bad sound, but there is no excuse as APC gigged there and it was beautifully clear).
Mudhoney and Fugazi + Helmet got to get a listen to that........have you ever listened to FudgeTunnel ???
High on Fire.........excellent, I managed to see them live in a small gig in Edinburgh.......they were outstanding....Matt Pike is like a new generation Ozzy without the drugs. The gig only held about 150 people and it was all civilised and we were right at the front...........I know that many people think they had a bad night if they dont get fight circles and stage diving, but at my age head banging and a bit of a dance about is enough
I agree with you on the vocals, it gets a bit predictable though I think BTBAM do it well. If you want something slightly more melodic/folky with the same doomy structure try Agalloch-Ashes.
