PC Input via composite.

Basically i have a TV with DVI and Compiste connections.
I ahe connected my 360 to the DVI to make it HD, but need to connect my PC somehow.
I have seen this item advertised:
http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?...C=SO&U=strat15

And i was wandering if i were to purchase this, would the computer be readable on the TV? the device says it supports the 1024x768 resolution which would be fine.

The TV is HD ready so can handle that res, but i would i be able word process, search the web etc with clarity buy using the above item?

Thanks.

Re: PC Input via composite.

It'll look horrid if you use composite. Why not get a DVI switch box? You also need to send native resolution, otherwise it'll look blurry.

Re: PC Input via composite.

i guess...but thats hassle having to switch between the two without using the TV remote.
would using S-Video be any better???
or is there any other way of connected my 360 and PC together, with the 360 being HD?

Thanks.

Re: PC Input via composite.

What about a DVI switcher then using a macro on your learning remote control?

S-Video will still look lousy.

Re: PC Input via composite.

sorry but im not that 'tech literate' so by learning remote do you mean the original tv remote or a seperate universal remote?

are there no DVI switches that change automatically?

Thanks again.

Re: PC Input via composite.

Does your 360 have a HDMI output, which you are then sending to the DVI-D input???????? I doubt it.

I suspect your TV has a DVI-I input, which allows both VGA from the 360 (via DVI-A) and DVI-D from the PC you just need a DVI splitter cable.

Please state your Tv model, this will help with the suggestions for solutions.

Are you already using the TV's component input for another source (DVD / PS3 etc)?

btw check out the FAQ as I suggest you may be confused between composite (single yellow video cable) and component (YUV).

Re: PC Input via composite.

Hi, thanks for your help.
The TV is a Philips 23PF5321/01.
My problem is that this TV has no component connections.
Sorry but i'm not sure what you mean by the 2 DVI slots, as far as i am aware it has only 1.

No, my 360 does not have a HDMI output, its too old. Could this be a problem?

Would using a DVI splitter cause the loss of any quality as i want the 360 looking good!

Thanks again for your help...much appreciated.

Re: PC Input via composite.

Your TV has a DVI-I socket, this allows both Digital and analogue input.

See the linked diagram:-

http://www.p4c.philips.com/files/2/2...21_01_cow_.jpg

You can buy a cheap dvi splitter cable, which gives you a VGA socket and a DVI-D socket. In some case where a HDready TV does not have a HD component (YUV) socket you can then use a VGA to component (YUV)adapter to enable HD component YUV input.

In your case you have about 6 options for HD from your PC and your XBox360 (these are the most likely 3):-

Option 1 (assumes your PC has a DVI (or HDMI) output:-
a) DVI splitter cable

I brought a Dell one, but this is similar:-
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/DELL-NEW-DVI-I...713.m153.l1262

b) DVI-D to DVI-D cable (or HDMI to DVI-D cable) from the PC

DVI-D cable (notice there are no pins around the blade terminal)
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/45492

c) VGA output cable from the XBox360

Option 2 (as Option 1 but using component from XBox360)
a) DVI splitter cable
b) DVI-D to DVI-D cable (or HDMI to DVI-D cable) from the PC
c) Component to VGA cable from the XBox360

Option 3 (Both PC and Xbox360 using VGA)
a) DVI to VGA cable

You are already using one of these to connect your Xbox360.

b) VGA to VGA cable from your PC
c) VGA output cable from the XBox360
d) Cheap KVM switch box (KVM = keyboard / video / mouse)

This is a 2-way KVM switch, you would only use the VGA sockets, it has a switch to swap inputs:-
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/132045...oduct_overview

The best pq would be Option 1, on your Philips remote you would switch between PC and HD inputs, see page 13 of the manual:-

http://www.p4c.philips.com/files/2/2...01_dfu_eng.pdf

For VGA input 1280x768@60hz, for DVI-D input 1280x720@50/60hz is the required PC resolution / refreshrate.

I think this is the owner's manual in Dutch......apologies for being a little-Englander, but it looks Dutch to me!

Re: PC Input via composite.

ok so with option 1, woul di need something like this?
http://www.amazon.co.uk/DVI-I-DVI-D-.../dp/B000I2JWVS

But with the above item, how do you switch between each source? could both the 360 and pc be on at the same time but displayed one at a time? also would any HD quality be lost? more connections=more interference?

Thanks again-much appreciated!

Re: PC Input via composite.

Check out the owner's manual, does your Xbox360 have a VGA to DVI cable, or a Component (3 cables YUV) to DVI cable (diagrams on page 12).

I saw the Amazon adapter, it is a bit expensive, and the 2 flying leads are Male (pins), they need to be female (sockets).

Does your PC definately have a DVI output?

With Option 1 to switch between VGA (Xbox360) and DVI-D (PC) you would press the source button (AV) on your remote, the XBox360 would be the PC input and the PC would be the HD input (a bit confusing I know).

i can easily get a cable for the 360 so it outputs vga if that helps.
there are no standard cables with the 360 that include dvi.

when you say - "the XBox360 would be the PC input and the PC would be the HD input" does this still mean i will be bale play the 360 in HD quality?

If the amazon one is not suitable, do you think you could point me in the right direction?

my pc has a VGA, DVI and S-video socket, so i am guessing the DVI is out, but i have always used the VGA.

Cheers again.

Thanks.

Re: PC Input via composite.

Moodie,

In your first post you say have connected your Xbox360 to the DVI socket, please can you describe the cables and adapters you are currently using.

Are you using the Xbox360 "HD component cable" or XBox360 VGA cable?

The cables are shown in this post:-

http://www.avforums.com/forums/showp...77&postcount=3

Neither of the Xbox360 cable will directly plug into the DVI socket, so do you use an adapter, or another conversion cable?

VGA adapter:-

http://shop.ati.com/product.asp?sku=2538009

YUV adapter:-

The audio would go into the 3.5mm PC audio input socket, but there is only one of these........again a few options.

You would either need to plug / unplug (this is not as bad as it sounds, and you could have a female to male 3.5mm extension lead so that the connection point is easily accessable.

Use an AV amp / active speakers for the PC.

Buy a audio switcher box.

Buy a combined audio / video switcher box, and only use the analogue side of the DVI socket (VGA from PC, and VGA from XBox360).
