My old sky box that I was using in the bedroom may have died. If it turns out I can't fix it what Freesat receiver would you recommend. I don't fancy another sky box, to unreliable, and before you suggest freeview I am in a black spot and only get sporadic reception so use freesat most of the time. One last point I don't have any money for this just now so cheap and reliable is a must.

That's impossible to answer really.
Considering that some sources state that Freesat will be out early next month there's been absolutely no news on what hardware will be available :(

Will be very cheap because as yet there is no such beast on the market
and Freesat will not start broadcasting until May at the very earliest and even then only with luck.
It looks like the first receiver to go on sale will be one from Humax that will be named as the Zapper and is rumoured to be "nearly ready" but with no definite pricing as yet.

If it were me, I would just buy a second hand $ky Digibox off ebay for the interim period. You can get them for about £15-£30 including delivery. If you go for the same model you currently have without remote/power lead/scart/instructions/viewing card & just use what you've already got - you'll probably looking at nearer £15 than £30.

Technically - isn't Freesat already broadcasting? Isn't the EPG radiating on Eurobird already, and the video streams are the same as now - so apart from ITV HD and the MHEG5 interactive stuff (if that isn't radiating yet) - isn't it up already - just waiting for receivers?
My understanding was that there are some beta versions of the receivers being tested in the field already...

I think I may be using the wrong terms, I currently have a Manhattan receiver that I use for my main system but it is obsolete and too expensive for the bedroom. I am after an equivelent for upsairs. Although one option may be to upgrage the manhattan and move it to the bedroom, but I don't think I could afford that.

Sky receivers are on the whole quite reliable...you may have had trouble with whatever box you had but it's wrong to state they're all unreliable. :lesson:
I notice that the Grundig Freesat reciever is available on the the Comet website and the 1st date you can have it delivered on is Mon 28th April where as most other stuff can be done Tues 23rd

If you look at http://www.joinfreesat.co.uk/, they have specs for the Humax Freesat HD receiver, plus the annoucement from John Lewis that they are launching Freesat from 6th May.... Although they are charging £100 install in co-op with Sky!!!!
Well just gone ahead and ordered one from Comet as if I do actually get it On Monday 28th April as promised then I could do with one for parents mobile home. I am just awaiting the email/telephone call to advise they have have messed up and I can not have until the following week. as what they have done is made it available straight away as soon as it is recieved into the awrehouse when official launch is not until the following week as info that has been leaked from John Lewis/DSG staff is they can expect the boxes and display material in store from 28th onwards and I believe the press relaese has been isuued and is under embargo until 30/04/08

I think you will find that the £100 install includes dish, cable and fixings which you do not get merely purchasing a box.
