THX on a processor/AV amp is not just a standard, but also a series of proprietary processes to make the sound of a home setup more like that of a cinema.
These include:
Re Equalisation - to take out the treble bathtub which is necessary when using speakers behind a screen.
Timbre matching - supposedly brings the frequency response of the front's and rears into line (useful when using di-poles)
Decorellation - adds a slight phase shift between the left and right rear speakers when using a mono soundtrack.
Accurate Time Alignment - any amp should do this, but THX mandates it.
Subwoofer peak limiter - prevents reference level soundtracks from wrecking our puny domestic subs.
75db Calibration noise - on all channels, including the sub.
Bass management - fixed 80Hz crossover, with specific roll off gradients.
There are more, when you add Ultra 2 and EX etc, but those are the basics.
