3 Automation Questions

Hi Forum

im trying to get my head around an automated setup for a new room in the house and I have 3 questions that I cant seem to find answers for.
  1. The Harmony 895 remote integrates with the z-wave technology although z-wave seems to be hard to find (and more expensive than x10) is there a harmony remote equivilent that can control X10 and my IR devices?
  2. With X10 or other light switches can you switch them manually with a button on the face plate? I can see me walking into a dark room after someone has hidden the remote under a cushion and needing some light!
  3. When utalising dimming functionality on these modules will they work with 12v lighting (down lights etc)? I know when I have bought 12v dimmers in the past they are different from standard dimming units? (and more expensive)
Really appreciate thoughts on these!

Thanks

James

Re: 3 Automation Questions

1: No direct X10 and IR learning remote, but you can get an IR X10 interface

2:Most yes but check specs

3:Again check spec of dimmers and lights for compatibility

Re: 3 Automation Questions

Thanks for the reply

Can I ask what you would think is the most widely used home automation system? Would you say most people would have 2 remotes, one for ir and one for RF? I have seen the rf to ir interfaces but it means another box on the shelf, i wonder whether its better just to have another remote?

Re: 3 Automation Questions

NO idea what is most widely used, proper automation systems can cope with more but cost a lot of money (have you looked a proper system?) A remote control is not automation Automation is actuall alot more and does things on an event basis (event can be time, action or scenario based)

Re: 3 Automation Questions

Yeah, good point horny. I guess im not looking at full automation, more of a simplification?!

Im going to look at more detail in to Z-wave as there seems to be many companies developing for this. Just cant seem to find a UK supplier with a wide range as of yet.

Re: 3 Automation Questions

Z-wave is in its infancy but i am sure it will come. at this point X10 my make more sense or standalone lighting with IR interface e.g. Rako
