My dvd player died this week so i'm movieless. Can anyone recommend a decent sub £100 player for my HDMI 50" DLP 720p tv.I have been looking at the Samsung 1080p7 which seems ok.Needs coaxial audio output and to be compatible with dvd-r/dvd+r and divx.

Re: best sub £100 upscaling dvd player....?

Apparently, the HD-DVD player Toshiba EP30 has great upscaling at a low cost (because of HD-DVD format's defeat).

I have both Denon 1940 and Toshiba EP30 and I can confirm that the Toshiba is the right upscaling player for that money. Both player have similar upscaling capabilities, but the Denon cost me ~350 Euro.

Re: best sub £100 upscaling dvd player....?

Having done some demos on the Denon 1740 / 1940 at the weekend, I can now reveal my newly gained knowledge...

upscaling is rubbish ! Or to be slightly less blunt and slightly more helpful, the upscaled picture if anything looked too smooth and lacking fine detail, but was otherwise the same as the normal picture.

Good upscaling starts with more expensive machines, I'm afraid. The PS3 is probably the best upscaler out there sub £1000 - but then it's a bit box of processors, so you'd hope it was pretty good at it.

Denon 1740's are sub 100 quid now (though hard to find) and looked good. I'm hunting down a 1940 myself - think they are down to 150 quid at richer sounds now.
