Can i use time capsule as my default hard drive?
Hi guys,
I wanna move all my media to my time capsule, in the sense that when i open my home folder, it's located on my time capsule, rather than having to open the time capsule folder and select my media from there.
You can do it in windows, for instance i had a bigger HD with my old PC, i connected it, right clicked my documents and changed the location of folder. so when i opened my documents, it open the folder in my external HD but was the menus on my pc stayed the same.
I'm not explaining this well but hopefully someone will understand!

What app are you selecting with? If eg. Front Row you could move your files to the TC and then place an alias to those folders in the movies/music/? folder on your internal drive so that Front Row will automatically reference the TC.

The TC is not a performance NAS solution, more of a backup tool. It'll be fine for sharing in low bandwidth applications, but data transfer speeds are not terrific.

What happens if your time capsule stops working?, could lose all your data. Fine if you are still keeping a copy of your media files else where.
Isnt the point of time capsule to backup files, ie from another drive, so there is always 2 copies.

No different to having all your media on your Mac and no copies. Failure is always a possibility.

well yes stating the obvious, as in that instance you would if you have not have bought a back up drive, so only have one main drive.
But now the OP has a backup drive, but wants to move his media to it, seemed common sense to me that is not the real suppose of time capsule.

Re: Can i use time capsule as my default hard drive?
There is nothing wrong with using the Time Capsule as a NAS. I am using it to store my media files as the hard disc in my Mac mini was getting full.
When I bought the TC from the Apple store the guy asked me what I was going to use it for. I told him and he did not say that this was not the purpose.
You can use aliases to point at the folders on the TC if you wish or you can tell iTunes that the media is on the TC from the preferences.
Hope this helps

Re: Can i use time capsule as my default hard drive?
if you did this, could you set the TC drive as a source to backup to a USB HDD attached to it? so if you had video stored on the TC drive your computer could back itup to the external drive?

Re: Can i use time capsule as my default hard drive?
Have a look at this Mac OS X Hint for instructions on how to move you home folder.
But as suggested above, I don't recommend using your Time Capsule in this way as it leaves you without a backup.
