According to hdtvorg.co.uk this is the top ten mid-range LCD TV's:-

01. Philips 32PFL9632D --------- 93%

02. Panasonic TX32LXD700 ----- 92%

03. Samsung LE40F86BDX ------ 92%

04. Panasonic TX-37LZD70F ---- 92%

05. Panasonic TX-32LXD70 ----- 92%

06. Samsung LE-40M87BDX ----- 91%

07. Sony KDL-40D3500 --------- 89%

08. Sony KDL-40W3000 -------- 89%

09. Sony KDL-37P3020 --------- 89%

10. Sony KDL-40V3000 --------- 87%

What I don't get is the Sony 40D3500 is above the 40V3000 in the ratings.
Also above the 40W3000.

Why???

The Sony 40D3500 is the same as the 40V3000 but has 1 less HDMI port and
yet it scores 2% more in it's review.

I am guessing you are a Sony fan. How many of these TVs have you actually seen. The Philips lag is only an issue for serious gamers. I find my 37 inch version is an outstanding TV, and have no issues with it

Well,hd tv org is not the best review site and the most trustworthy if you have a look some review parts are just copy paste!!

But the Philips range has been given rave reveiw across a few magazines over the last month or two, outscroring the Sony W3000 on one of the groups tests...

If your main uses are freeview and DVD/blu ray then the philips is the one 2 go for.
Freeview is awsome.
Games not so good though (slight lag).
