Is that 10feet? if so go for a 40-42inch tv. 32 would be way to small.

Yes thts 10 foot, so what size would be better or would it be better to move the sofa into the centre of the room and have a 32" and have a surroud sound system put in my room too.

Sony Dav-DZ230 then you can link it to you S3000 so you get one touch connectivity with your TV,Its called theatre sync.
The Dav also upscales DVD's to HD quality via HDMI

32" is actually quite small these days to think that used to be a huge size

40" will be perfect imo.

It depends what you're going to watch on it. 40" would be great with a HD source or maybe a dvd. I tried a 40" in my room which is a little bigger and I thought standard def freeview looked pretty bad on it. The quality of the screen really showed how poor the standard def signal was. It was bad enough to distract me from what I was trying to watch so I'm about to buy a 32" instead.
I'd reccomend going to find the Tv you're interested in and stand at the viewing distance you will have in your room and see if you are happy with what it looks like from there.

decide what size of tv you want then go and buy the next size up... guaranteed that a month after purchase you'll wish you had gone bigger.

i have heard this so many times!

i only have a 26" in my bedroom, but its due to and in-set part of the wall i've placed it in. I could go 32" but it would be tight its un-true and i wouldnt be able to swivel it, which i do a lot

12 feet viewing distance.

I will watch both HD (media player) and SD (normal digital TV broadcast).

The thing is, my sofa is "L" shape. So from the nearest side "|", it will be about 8 feet ... but from the far most side "_", it will be 12 feet viewing distance.

I would love to have 52" because I think from the far most side "_" , it would be perfect (correct?).

But I am concern if people sitting in the nearest "|" side to the TV ... 8 feet to 52" would be not good :(

I think 40inch would be good for those distances.

This is an important point. If you only intend to watch freeview SD progams then the bigger the TV will show the low signal quality. I have yet to see a good LCD bigger than 32" in a standard room - if you are viewing from a big distance then a bigger screen may OK. If you have HD or want gaming in HD then the big screens come into there own.

It will be crap on SD at about 8 feet especially the low bit rate channels on freeview.

I saw the Sony KDL-32S300 today and I stood the distance I would sit away from it and the picture was brilliant but its not 1 of the nicest looking TVs, the samsungs look so much more stylish. But anyway as soon as I get the money I'm buying the sony but I may just wait till may, then hopefully there might be a price drop, so I can get a bigger TV for round about the same price as the sony is at the minute.

A non techie type reply here. we have a 40" sammy and are mor than happy with it. The viewing distance varies from about 6-7 feet at one end of the sofa to about 9 at the other. I looked at some of the "recommended" screen sizes based on distance that are on these forums and to be honest I ignored them. They al suggested I should buy a 200" screen if I ever even thought of the possibility of watching HD material. To be honest, for me the TV is just one element of my sitting room. If I'd bought a larger screen it would've;

1 ****** off the other half.

2 ****** her off becasue it would've looked ridiculous in our sitting room.

I'm not into scatter cushions and "balance" in my interior decorating but even a gadget addict male has to admit some things just look silly.

In terms of the viewing experience. Yes, the SD picture is probably worse than on our old 32" CRT. BUT, the viewing experience is much better. Watching TV is just so much more enjoyable.

I have Sky HD and obviously that looks really good. Some of the advice available suggested there would be no HD benefit to a 40" at 9 feet. Again, it works for us, and you can clearly see a big difference, not just between SD and HD but between SD DVDs and (Sky & Bluray) HD. As has been said SD PQ can vary, however, I did notice a marked improvement when we got the Sky HD box and fed the image through that. I think it has something to do with HDMI (?). SD PQ can be relatively poor, I watch F1 and the PQ can be rubbish on the interviews, it seems to vary with the channels as well, the Beeb is noticeably better than Five. But again, it can be really, really good. My parents were round the other day and were set to go out and buy the same TV when they'd seen ours - they were convinced all the channels were HD!

I'd go out and look at some sets and change the channel to SD. Go round to friends and see what their experience is, etc.. But you also need to be able to live with the thing in your front room, so if it looks like a pig give it a miss.

Does this make a difference on what screen size you should go for and if you should go 720p 1080i or 1080p (obviously 1080p etc, would be for futureproofing for HD content)

cheers

Well for SD you need to sit further away then for HD.

I sit 9 feet away from my TV and originally had a 32 but to be honest this was way to small. I now have a 40 1080p screen and this is perfect for my viewing distance for freeview and dvds.

The only HD content i have viewed so far are 720p files from my pc which also look great.

What about a 46 screen as compromise?

Do people often sit in the nearest position to the TV or is that more just visitors? If it's just visitors than i would go for whats best for your viewing distance.

I currently have the Sony 40V300 but i am getting a toshiba 42Z3030 as a replacement as the sony has clouding on top right hand side and i wanted something a little better.

For freeview it's totally acceptable for a big screen and with Dvd's it's great.
