Wireless range increase.

Hi folks,
we have virgrinmedia cable feeding internet to our house. Unfortunately the cable comes in at one corner of it where we have the main PC. For christmas we went wireless (I got the Belkin Wireless G Plus router) and that allowed us to go Live with the 360 in the front room with the wireless adapter I also got. So far so good. We also have a laptop that has built in wireless and I have now also got a iPhone. The problem is that there is just not enough range with the wireless for the iPhone and laptop for other area's of the house, ie upstairs. I have looked at moving the wireless router, but that will be a painfull move due to the layout of the house, and I,d rather not drill holes in walls etc.

Should I have gone the 'N' route (forgive the pun) or is there another solution?

Re: Wireless range increase.

hi,
you can just add an access point - this will just be a small box with an aerial - you could place this somewhere else in the house to extend coverage - you would then configure it to connect wirelessly to your router - then all appliances would be set up to either connect to the router or the access point, depending on the closest/strongest signal - or using a preference.

A friend of mine did the same thing - his main connections are all in the cellar and he loses wireless connectivity on the first floor - so he actually just added another router (with access point functionality) in the living room on the ground floor (hidden away on top of a cupboard) which has excellent connection to the cellar router, but can then feed the rest of the house easily.

Hope this helps.

Simon

Re: Wireless range increase.

Thanks Simon

We also have an older wireless router that I don't think can be used as an access point (Belkin F5D7630), but I could make that into the 'main' router and make the newer Belkin G+ router as an access point more central to the house, giving a greater coverage area. Does that sound a possibility? The G+ is the non-mimo version.
