i need help with my new HTPC

hi guyz
ok lemmi break it to ya, i won 3000euros in the lottery last week and im planning to build my first HTPC.
the thing is, im extremly noobish when it comes to Audio hardware, so i choosed the following parts:
JBL ES80 (4 pieces) 2 front and 2 rear, each one is about 400watt max
JBL ES25c center speaker 300watt max
JBL ES250p subwoofer 700watt max

now did i do that right? i mean do those parts fit fine together?
i needed to choose a reciever so i saw the Samsung AV-R720, but when i read the specs it said 850watt max, does that mean the reciever will limit my speakers to 850 in total?

thanks in advance

Re: i need help with my new HTPC

You reference an 'HTPC' in the title (eg a Home Theatre PC) which is a PC with all the components to support Home Theatre, except (usually) the Power Amplifiers and speakers.

Your question seems to concern mainly your AVR, the Audio-Visual Receiver from Samsung.

This is rated as a 7.1 channel device with 6 channels rated at 100W, and the seventh sub-bass channel at 150W (providing a total of 7 channels at your 850W).

The peak outputs (a short peak of energy) are usually double that figure, ie 200W a channel + 300W for the sub-bass.

Your speakers should have a sustained maximum that AT LEAST matches the rated power, and a maximum that matches the peak. You never want to drive these to peak anyway, as the cones are being driven to their full extension. So with your speakers, you have a good match to handle the amplifier channels.

Yes, you are limited to 850W. But unless you've won another lottery and have a very big house, or you intend to have pop festivals in your garden, I shouldn't worry. Neighbours start to complain before you ever get to 850W.

Others may indicate otherwise: I'm a newbie. It may all depend on the sensitivity of the speakers, where you position them, your threshold of pain etc.

I think the JBL speakers are very good and a Onkyo AV receiver might compliment them very well. However, you should consider to invest some of your 3000 Euros in a english lessons.

Second why do ask for advise after you have purchased your equipment? If you decided that this is right thing for you than thats it. Nobody else can make that decision for you. Only your ears are important. If it sounds right for you than you have made the right decision.

In terms of receivers the Onkyo/Denon/Yamaha enjoy a good reputation and overall is the watt number something that is rather theoretical. There is no linear relationship between watt and volume and most amps will be fine to satisfy your speakers for 90% of domestic use (that doesn't mean they are able to drive to full performance).

Hope you enjoy your new system.
