View Full Version : Films derived from Games

I was playing a few games on my pc last night when a thought which has more than likely been brought up and if it has I applogiese but do you think that films derived from games really work?

I have only known of a few, the main from being Doom with Dwayne "the rock" Johnson which removed the story quite a way from the original game (couldn't possibly have anything to with hell in a film after all) and to a lesser extent Alien Vs Predator.

It has been discussed the possibility of a Half Life film, personally I don't fully understand the point of this as the HL series were largely cinematic despite not having any really FMV's, the same could be said for F.E.A.R and I would hate for the games to be runined by someone from Hollywood trying to cash in on a huge fanbase. I have heard they wish to also make a Halo film. I was never that into the Halo series but I know a lot of people were and I imagine that would hold the same reservations.

"The Spirits Within" never truely hurt the Final Fantasy series because it wasn't technically based on the games but I am yet to find one gamer who thought a film was really needed or added anything.

I am not sure if it works and I only hope that if something like Half Life is made into a film it will only add to what is already a fantastic series but I have my reservations.

Peter Jackson's version of Donkey Kong was fantastic!!!

It might sound like a joke, but it does emphasise that any game could theoretically make a great film.

dont hold your breath on that one being any good. JCVD said he was asked to reprise his role as guile. Sounds more like a sequel!

Agreed, how they got permission to make the film from Capcom is beyond me, the animated movie wasn't bad though...

Alien Vs Predator isn't a film derived from a game? Alien & Predator were seperate movies first, then they were combined into a comic book, then combined into a movie.

I am not sure about the comics I have to say simple because I have not read them so I am not sure which came first, the comic books or the game itself, if it was derived from an idea in the comic books as appose to the game then I wasn't aware :)

I always thought that Max Payne was based on Mel Gibson but Max Payne the movie is out this year and Gibson isnt even in it, pitty he would have been a better Max Payne than Marky Mark.

The comic books came before the games. The AvP films were also also derived from the comic books :)

I love the Resident Evil films, though yet to see the most recent.

Doom was good if you just saw it as a cheesy action flick (plus I watch everything with the Rock :D)

Tomb Raider 1 was cool, 2 was just so bad plot wise. Still, just one of those things you watch anyway!

Uwe Bolle :devil::devil:

He has ruined a couple of perfectly good game franchises...

House of The Dead
Alone in the Dark
Bloodrayne

All stink like you wouldnt believe & I urge you all to stay well away from these abominations

Oh & then there is House of the Dead 2 with Sid Haig in it & even he couldnt save it from being utter utter poop.

Clue was camp and funny.
Jumanji was pretty cool.
Tron was way ahead of its time.

How about "Geri's Game" - a Pixar short which accompanied Bug's Life - best Chess movie ever!

With games like Halo or Metal Gear Solid I am starting to wonder if the Action Genre whilst not going out of the window is certainly in trouble.

I have just watched the Halo 3 trailer, all looks very impressive, I also remember watching the trailer for MGS4 and thinking "oh.. my.. god..".

It looked very much like the sort of thing that could be a potential good film but where a film is not really needed, if you haven't seen it its here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I3xdzi6F1lg&feature=related).

Will hopefully clear some things up in the game aswell...

There was a film ages back based on Dungeons And Dragons (can't recall the actual title). I think it was funded by the religious right, who had a real beef with Dungeons And Dragons; they believed playing it led to satanism (I think, at best, it leads to reading Lord Of The Rings and then onto lesser works that all seem to take three books to resolve; at worst, it leads to smoking cannabis and listening to third-rate prog rock bands). The story revolved around some teenager who was really into his roelplaying and started to lose perspective on what was real and what was not. Utter tosh with a questionable agenda - whereas the film some years later calling itself Dungeons And Dragons was just utter tosh.
