It's not like me to rant but I have to. Sorry .. I'll keep it nice though
I bought the 5100 a few months ago, a few weeks before I heard about the 6500 at which point I thought "Uh oh ..". There was active development on the firmwares for the 5100 (see release dates, every month or two). Notes stated that some parts were still in development (like embedded subtitle support in MKV).
At this point we are more than 3 months since the latest firmware release and the same notes still apply. VC-1 support hasn't improved, WMApro is still unsupported (with which WMV-HD is completely useless), still waiting on MKV subtitle support. I can co on....
Needless to say there is a new model, the 6500 and development is obviously focussing on working out the bugs and improving support of this lovely new model.
That's why I say I'm screwed .. right? What the hell about the 5100???
I've read the posts saying the specs of the 6500 are so much better and everything is easier bla bla bla. Remember that when I bought the 5100 it said it would do all that too, and it's half baked since its release. I'm not very happy about that and I realize that I took a gamble and all that. It was a choice I made, sure. But stating things on your website about "work in progress" creates expectations and makes people make a somewhat "calculated risk" that doesn't include dropping support simply because there is a new model that "is easier to work with". Screw that.
It's all too bad isn't it? I guess that's what it is. Simply too bad ...
