Best one is the synology DS207+ (really expensive)
then the buffalo linkstation (quite expensive)
followed by dlink dns-323 (expensive)

All the cheaper ones are total rubbish with rank rotten cpu's, speed, support etc.

Re: which nas unit

I have a Synology DS-207+ and it is excellent, as is their support

It has been running for 5 months 24/7 with no problems

includes:-

Raid 0 + 1
3 USB ports
1 eSATA port
Gigbit LAN
Web sever
PHP/MySQL
File server
iTunes server
FTP server
uPnP multimedia server
Print server
Photo/Video Station with blog functionality
IP Camera Surveilance Station
Download Station http/ftp/bittorrent
Power requirements 52.2W(Spin); 32.76W(Access);
28.32W(Idle); 11.04W(Hibernation)
Can be set to hibernate every 10 minutes and takes about 5 to 10 seconds to wake up

Price is about £210 plus the hard discs

Once the hard discs are installed and formatted, it takes about 15 minutes to set up

Re: which nas unit

I've also got the DS207+

It's very good albeit a bit pricey. The Synology Forum site is an excellent source for support or questions you may have.

I think the speeds are comparable if not better than similar spec models, but to be honest I find file transfer times dissapointing when using NAS boxes.

I like the excellent photostation module which allows you to store all your photos and publish them on a web interface for remote viewing.

I upgraded the DS207+ to the latest Beta firmware, and this finally adds support for the Xbox 360 - so I can now stream photos, music & movies to my TV.

One dissapointing aspect is the BitTorrent implementation. Yes you can use it to download torrents but it doesn't allow seeding, hence you will eventually get very slow download speeds as users kick you off for not uploading.

Good luck with your search

Re: which nas unit

Just don't buy the Netgear SC-101. It's not a NAS, more like a HD that sits on your LAN but requires software/drivers on the PC's to access it. Therefore not a NAS

Got a D-Link DNS-323, works well although little bit noisy. Supposed to be getting torrent app, but was dropped on beta fw

Re: which nas unit

Apologies for jumping in here, but I'm also interested in a NAS unit, although I know very little about them. Having files stored on a unit I can access from either my laptop or desktop sounds ideal. However, the laptop is Vista, and the desktop (when I put it back together) is Linux (OpenSuse), does this matter? I haven't networked them before, just accessed the net via the same router. Networking is something else I need to get sorted. The DS-207 sounds good, and the technical description mentions Windows machines accessing it via Samba, which I did set up years ago for a project at work, so I'm hopeful I'll be able to do it again I presume the Linux desktop will be fine? Anything else I should bear in mind? Thanks in advance.

You will have no problem accessing it from a Linux machine

The main configuration page is web based, but you will have to use a Windows based PC/Laptop to set up a static IP address, unless you use DHCP
