5.1 on Blu Ray

I've got a 5.1 amp currently. Perhaps in the future I'll upgrade it but I don't really have the space for the additional two speakers to make up to 7.1

Do blu-ray disks still have a 5.1 soundtrack? Or is there downsampling from 7.1 to 5.1?

Best wishes
James

Yes, it looks like it. It's an old Sony STR-DB930 - I currently drive it from my DVD player using an optical connector and it decodes DD5.1 and DTS

Best wishes

Re: 5.1 on Blu Ray

Most BluRays have 5.1 as std,but I have had issues trying to find the 5.1 sound track on the spiderman series see this thread Spiderman 3 Blu-Ray no 5.1 sound on PS3?
it was there,it just wasn't obvious.
I have an aincient PIONEER DV 55 and it plays 5.1 through an optical connection from BluRay no problem.

Hi james

If you use the 5.1 analogues you will get the hd sound formats ..with a player that decodes hd sd formats

Re: 5.1 on Blu Ray

So should I get a player that has analogue outputs and use the blu ray player to decode all the soundtracks?

Or should I just I connect it up via the optical connector and let the receiver decode DD5.1 soundtrack?

I'm guessing the former...?

Best wishes
James

Hi Jabes
It all depends what you want your amp has the Multi analogue connections right? so if you want HD audio you will have to get a player with the Multi-outs.

Yeah, I got that.
So I was trying to understand th
e difference between getting a player with optical out and piping DD5.1 soundtrack off the disk to my receiver

...and getting a player with 5.1 analogue outs and connecting them to my amp's analogue input

I'm thinking the second option would allow me to play audio encoded in formats which my old receiver can't understand and so I would do better doing that..

But since I don't know what codecs are actually used exist on blu ray disks I'm just guessing

I have the same sony amp and the PS3 connected to it with optical works great.

Just set the optical output on the PS3 to bitstream and you get the normal 5.1 DD/DTS sound.
