PS3 as Blu Ray player (sorry)
Sorry I know this will have been done to death but I have been hanging on wondering when to buy a Blu Ray player and which to get. Now due to this offer: http://www.ivojo.co.uk/sanyo-plv-z2000.htm I have a PS3 40gb in my possession. Currently it is unopened to preserve its resale value if I do not decide to keep it. Obviously however I need to consider it's merits as a Blu Ray player (can't see me using it for games).
Can anyone let me know what the PS3 is like for Blu Ray compared to stand alone players particularly in terms of:
- Image quality
- Fan noise
- Loading times
- Does it output 1080p over HDMI?
- Does it have 5.1 analogue out, if so will it output any hi def audio through these?
- Are there any interactive (Wii type) games for it, and any hardware allowing it to act a bit like a Wii (motion sensing controllers). I have always thought about getting a Wii, like the idea of the thing.
If I sell it as brand new, would £250 be competitive with ebay etc?
I know I could research these answers, but someone well informed could give me the lot in 3 mins I'd bet.
Thanks for anyone's help.
Paul

Hi linnite
Image quality > can hold it's own against any BD player out there.
Fan noise > mine's quiet.
Loading > Fastest there is.
1080p/24 over HDMI > yep.
No Mulit's > decodes HD audio and sends it LPCM over HDMI.

Re: PS3 as Blu Ray player (sorry)
And not forgetting the PS3 is upgradeable to latest Blu-ray profile, whereas current stand alone players are not.

Re: PS3 as Blu Ray player (sorry)
Thanks.
Will it need a firmware update to do 1080p24? I suppose it might depend on how long this particular PS3 has been gathering dust on a shelf? Then again, it's a 40gb model so not all that long.
I assume as well I'd get Dolby Digital and DTS over optical output?
Thanks again.

Re: PS3 as Blu Ray player (sorry)
It'll do 1080p/24 no problem at all.

Kingfats, I've just noticed you've answered this question on another thread, so mystery solved.

Hi sdb123, we contributed to a lot of the same threads about PJ's for a while. A few of us that were waiting have finally jumped recently, and now me too! I went for the Sanyo Z2000 on fan noise, price, lens shift and shadow detail (as distinct from black level).

Re: PS3 as Blu Ray player (sorry)
Just me or does that projector seem damn good for the money?
Minus the ps3 it's like £1200 for a 1080p projector

Well I think I'm right in thinking that the 24p output was added as a firmware update at some stage - however I have no idea what firmware version the 40gb models ship with, so it may well already be at a version that supports it. Not that it will really matter anyway as it is extremely easy to update and basically does it automatically once you set up the network connection (either by simply connecting via ethernet or by setting up a wireless connection). Alternatively (if for any reason you aren't able to connect the PS3 to the internet) you can download the update file on a PC from the playstation site and then apply it to the PS3 via a memory stick or CDR etc.

Think you have looked at the price before VAT there?
It's a little under £1500 if you count the PS3 at full price.

Re: PS3 as Blu Ray player (sorry)
Oh well, it's been out of the box today and I've had a mess around with it. I've no software of any sort to try on it (I suppose I could see how a DVD looks on it) but I've decided it's a keeper at least until the time when the players I think I really want like the Panny '50' or the sony '550' are out, debugged and available in numbers. Also known as 'next winter'. And then if the PS3 is not being used for any games it can be sold then.
In the manual by the way, it says 'DTS HD is not output at 7.1 channel, it is only output at 5.1 or less'.
I thought DTS HD wasn't supported at all?

Ah well. Maybe they can update that via firmware. They seem to be able to do anything and everything else. Profile 2.0 anyone?

HAve a play with it as a media server from your PC as well and you'll never get rid. Twonky or Tversity are popular choices for media sever sofware

Re: PS3 as Blu Ray player (sorry)
Sorry the the slight off forum topic diversion.
Hi Paul,
How is the fan in Eco mode on your Sanyo Z2000 PJ? I am looking for a PJ that is near to silent. It seems this one is just about the quietest you can get. Would be interested to know what you think.
Cheers,
Colin
