In short, yes.

Umm..no. The A1XVA can, the A1XV can't (it needs the "A" spec upgrade). Personally, not too fussed about it as I use PLIIx for everything.

Can the upgrade still be done to make it an A model? what happens when it receives 7.1 PCM? does it just ignore the bck channels? Can a player be set to downmix 7.1 to 5.1 I wonder?

Re: Can the AVC-A1XV do 8 channel PCM via HDMI

The upgrade is still available. You need to contact your dealer or Denon UK about it. I'd imagine with a 7.1 PCM track it would just punt out the 6th and 7th channels via Surround Back Left & Right. Not sure about downmixing as I don't have any discs with a 7.1 track.

Now HD DVD has kicked the bucket I'll have to get a Blu Ray player and find out what it does with the various tracks. Be interesting to see if the player can detect that my Amp can't pick up a 7.1 PCM via HDMI and if it adjusts the output accordingly...
