Philips DVP5980 Update Problem
Is there any possibility or way to fix this problem?
While I was updating my Philips DVP5980, suddenly the electric current changed and the the player stopped responding. Now there is only the "PHILIPS" sign on the indicator, and no response when I press the buttons. What can I do??
Thanks.

Re: Philips DVP5980 Update Problem
Thanks a lot for the quick reply chris57. Do you know something about these cable connections? If I connect the CD-ROM's supplementary audio cable (black, red and white wires) to RS232 cable will I succeed to reflash my dead player? If its OK, what is the best method to connect them to each other?
Thanks.

Re: Philips DVP5980 Update Problem
Please, help.
My Philips dvd player DVP5980 died on me during the upgrade. I was stupid enough not to follow the simple upgrade procedure accurately and what i am left with is the player with an open tray and no lights on whatsoever. I suppose it serves me right.
It doesn't react to anything: no plugging - unplugging routine seem to make any effect.
Is there a way to fix is, apart from what
chris57 is suggesting to?
Thank you and happy Easter

Re: Philips DVP5980 Update Problem
You gotta open the player's case and find the flash memory. When you do this you need a rs32 cellphone cable, probably nokia's 3310 will be useful, mine worked fine. Now the hard part comes; find the "gnd-tx-rx" pinouts on the cable. You'll make the right connections on the flash memory pins. The gnd pin will go to gnd but tx and rx may go opposite just try it. Then download "MTK Tool" and find a firmware file for you player, you can find on philips' website. Now you're gonna reflash your dead player with that program. It will probably take some 3-4 minutes to finish it.
Any questions, just ask. Good luck!!

Re: Philips DVP5980 Update Problem
thank you so much for your quick reply, umitmurat84.
i haven't opened the box yet. i will make sure that i have all the required tools to perform the surgery first.
as for the MTK Tool, do i need a particular version of this program? 1-29, 1-31 or 2-35 ?
did you have to swap Tx and Rx lines on your Nokia cable?
thanks again.

Re: Philips DVP5980 Update Problem
You're welcome Viktor.
I think I used the 1-29 version of the mtk tool, I heard that this version was more stable than other ones.
When I connected the cable to the reflasher for the first time it didn't work out. Second time I just swapped the tx and rx tips of the cable on the reflasher and guess what; it started the process. That's all.
I hope everything works fine for you... take it easy.

Re: Philips DVP5980 Update Problem
it sounds stupid, but how do you open the box? i removed the obvious screws from the back and both sides, but the cover does not go off still. it seems to be attached somewhere in front. do you have to remove the front plastic panel, or press something? i don't want to exert too much force, so as not to break it.
if you ignore this post, i will fully understand thank you

Re: Philips DVP5980 Update Problem
Yes I understand that, it happened to me also. If you're sure about removing all the screws, just lift the cover upwards and do not pull to yourself, then it will work.

Re: Philips DVP5980 Update Problem
I marked the area that you gotta use for reflashing. With a high possibility pin no.1 is the GND and the other two are TX and RX.
Take care!

Re: Philips DVP5980 Update Problem
i've never expected it all to be so "non-straightforward" on the other hand, i couldn't have wished for a better assistance. thnx a million, umitmurat84.
i may fix it, or not, u know, it doesn't matter that much. with the help of the internet you are never alone with whatever problem you have.
in the spirit of the yanks when they say "g, bless america" i say "g.b. the internet"
thank you.

Re: Philips DVP5980 Update Problem
I appreciate your politeness Viktor, any time.
Yes, the internet is a magical thing. When my player had gone dead I didn’t know any-thing what to do. I was frightened. The day I repaired it myself with the help of the internet, I was in the same state of mind as you are. So “g.b. the internet”.
It was a big pleasure to me assisting you.
Live the luckiest, and also the happiest life ever...
