View Full Version : Monster's Ball R1DC vs international vs cinema
Right as most fans of the film know Forster had to cut his film to get an R instead of NC17 int he states. at that time (and stil now) Imdb says that the version in canada and international will be the uncut/unrated.
But that didn't happen as the movie we got in the cinema bbfc link to cinema version (http://www.bbfc.co.uk/website/Classified.nsf/c2fb077ba3f9b33980256b4f002da32c/7fd0e38c5285e68080256b8400315ee1?OpenDocument) was only 111min and 30s
the Signature DC I got this week is 112.37 min long so a minute missing. so we saw the cut version in the cinema. Then the DVD came out here and it had the same extras as the cut R1 (even the two commentaries)
Now the new DCR1 has a new commentary but after substracting the 4% pal speedup from the R1 SE I get 108 min just the running time of the UKR2 DVD:confused:
So now I am:confused:
If the vut R1 has the same commentaries as the uncut UKR2, how come that the new uncut R1 has a new commmetary that fit's that DC and....oh I lost it now. but see what I mean? The UK must have stretched the commentaries to fit the longer running time, no?
Nevermind, but now I'm thinking I would have been better off just buying the UKR2 as it seems uncut and has more extras than the DCR1. Now I "need" to buy the UK as well then as sort of an SE. at least the US has a different commentary and 20min of interview and 20min behind the scenes not on the UKR2, then again the UKR2 will be in the bargain section in 3 months for 8quid.
So Am I the only one kinda mislead??

Your babbling on in your post so I don't fully understand you :grin: , but the 4% figure for PAL speedup is only approximate....

Point is cut version: 111min30s
uncut version:112min37s
UK dvd version is 108min 1s
that is most likely thePal version of 112min 37 than 111min30s.
So that means even though our cinema version was the cut version the DVD UK is uncut, but in that case the commentaries won't fit as they were for the cut R1 version.

The Reg 4 has the same commentary as the original Reg 1 and that is definitely uncut (even says so on the front cover). I reckon they may have "paused" the commentary during the extended sex scene or something.
What's more weird than the commentaries is that the Reg 2 is uncut and yet a 15??? Even the uncut Australian Reg 4 is an R (18+)!!
Anyway, I have ordered the Reg 2 so once it arrives, I'll let you know. I've not seen either the theatrical or the uncut version so I'll time the extended sex scene and then see if it matches with your timing (4% speedup will make no significant difference to such a short scene) :smoke:

just to be certain, do you think you might have to view and time the sex scene on at least 8 or 9 occasions?

I got the region 3 version that's 111 mins . It may not have the extended rumpy pumpy in it but was still a bargain imo.
I think neither DC R1 nor the UKR2 (or R3 for that matter) are too expensive. for UKR2 I would wait another month for the DVD to hit the bargain bin.

Just watched it. Here's the deal.
The R2 UK version is 108min 06secs
The sex scene lasts 4mins 07secs.

I timed the scene from the following start frame which is at 1:10:20

How does this compare with your unrated Reg 1, Lux? :)
Interestingly, both commentaries ran for the full duration of the sex scene. If you confirm that the Reg 2 is identical to the Reg 1, then it looks like they recorded the commentaries on the unrated version and then edited them for the rated Reg 1.

very insteresting:
my NR R1 starts at around 1:13:00 and ends at 1:17:27 giving 4 min and 27 sec. compared to the UKR2 of 4:07.
those aprox. 20 sec is what we should lose via NTSC-PAL conv.
US: 4*60+27=267sec
-4% =256sec which is around 4 min and 16 seconds. (only ten seconds lost)
But I think I started a tad later (2-3 seconds than SG)
that would leave around 7 seconds unaccounted for.
but as those 4% are only approx and our timers might work slightly different I guess we
can conclude that the UKR2 is the SAME as the R1 UNRATED!!!

Nice one! There could be 7-10 secs of cuts I suppose but it seems very unlikely as the cuts are supposed to be a minute long. So it looks like they are the same! Thanks for doing that :)
