small sub for 3.5m w x 3.5m d 2.5m h room

with these dimensions ( 3.5m w x 3.5m d 2.5m h ) and a fair bit of furniture probably going to driven by cambridge audio 540r and a set of kef 2005.2 sats.

i have been looking at either the bk minotaur, bk gemini, rel quake or the
mj acoustics pro50 mk11.

budget wise the minotaur comes up trumps and seeming as i have paper thin walls and incredibly angry old neighbours... i am drawn to this one. i dont want MASSIVE earth shaking bass( well not yet anyway...)

just decent, punchy deep room filling bass.

will the minotaur be enough? or should i go up one?

I would go for the Gemini ratrher then the minotaur for a few extra quid you get a lot more power.
Really though if you have angry old neighbours dont bother getting any as there is nothing worse than having to listen to your neighbours tv.

Re: small sub for 3.5m w x 3.5m d 2.5m h room

see my thread -I have got the bug and maybe upgrading to a large sub.

I have a Pro 50 and its is great -but not a huge sound.

I turn it up for DVD's and certainly notice the impact, and have it a bit lower for music and again adds bass.

Its in black and in perfect unmarked condition -was just thinking whether to sell or use in another room when read your thread. Let me know if you maybe interested.

If you're prepared to shell out Pro 50MkII money (£300?) then get an XLS-200 at £289 which kicks the arse of anything on that list.

If a sub is too loud, simply turn it down and also remember that better quality subs distort less, which also tends to annoy neighbours less.

Re: small sub for 3.5m w x 3.5m d 2.5m h room

thanks for replies!!

yeh not really sure i can afford to shell out over £200 on a sub at the moment.

i was hoping to go second hand, but am steering toward the gemini if i have to go new.

seems like a much better idea than shelling out the extra on a pretty similar model (mj acoustic pro50 mk11)

gareth..

i may well be interested in your pro50 if the price is right.

do you have a thread for the sale?

is it a mk 11 ? whats the difference between a mk1 ?

p.s. russ.will

is the xls -200 a front firing setup?

im really after downward firing purely down to 4 probing toddler hands

they have already squished two speaker dust caps (hence my decision on wall mounted kef 2005.2 eggs

Re: small sub for 3.5m w x 3.5m d 2.5m h room

The MkI is the Minotaur, the MkII has a bigger driver and a little more power IIRC.

If second hand is Ok and £200 is the limit, then I'd definitely keep an eye on the forum classifieds. The XLS-200 looses a few funky features, but is basically the same as the MJ Ref 200, which retails for £750.

If you can find the BK second hand, it's a no brainer. Either Pro 50 is a fart box in comparison.

Patience is a virtue, although as Mr. Impulsive, I'm probably the last person to listen to.

Re: small sub for 3.5m w x 3.5m d 2.5m h room

these forums definitely seem the best place to pick up bargains.

especially if your patient and put the time in to look regularly.

still not convinced on a front firing sub though...(blasphemous i know)

i may hold out for a gemini to come around.

As mentioned above, you can get both FF and DF versions of the XLS200 MKII.
