These sorts of threads baffle me at times, we might have totally different tastes for all you know  :)

Up untill the actual battle scenes start the movie is nothing special, however once the fighting starts the movie is fantastic. I make no apologies for stating that it's my number one Vietnam movie by quite some margin. What you have is a movie where the enemy is treated with respect for a change, after Braveheart and The Patriot it's nice to see Gibson being humble and telling it like it is instead of embellishing the facts.

The battle scenes are breathtaking and the DD sound accompanies the onscreen action brilliantly. Buy it instantly :smashin:

thanks for the reply apocalypse.

i realise people have different tastes, and it`s all a matter of opinion, but hey it`s a sale item. i won`t be too upset if i don`t enjoy it as it`s not going to break the bank.
i could have ran a search on it for film critics reviews, but decided to get a few opinions here instead.

True different people do have different taste, but there was a thread about we were soldiers a little while back and the general opinion was that it is a very good film.

Sorry to be a negative voice, but i found it very disappointing.

:(

The Vietnam war is one of my favorite subjects for study. One of the reasons for that, was the book "We were soldiers once, and young". A fantasticly detailed account of the events that took place in the Ia drang valley.

Unfortunatly the film only tells half the story and tells it poorly at that  .
Messrs Moore, Galloway, Plumley, etc are portraid well by their respective actors, but where is Rick Rescorla ? His squad was one of the pivotal unit in the action and he doesn't get a mention. Sad really as he was a Brit, who eventually (3 tours of Nam) died in the WTC tradgedy whilst organising the evacuation of his office staff.
Also the film gives us the impression that all the troops left on hueys at the end of the LZ Xray fight. Err sorry, but several hundred marched on foot toward an alternate LZ several kilometers away and were proptly ambushed and almost wiped out.

It's an enjoyable film, don't get me wrong, but it's not the film i was hoping to see.

Having read the comments on IMDb it seems to have been well received amongst their reviewers which is enough to earn my £9.95 or whatever it is in the sale

So you are judging the film based on the book, you fall into perhaps less than 1% of the people who viewed the film. Some films even though they distort the original book can still be enjoyable (Interview With A Vampire, Jurassic Park etc) but I agree with you that it's annoying when the pivotal parts of a book are ignored/altered. Jurassic Park the movie changed the children from being an older brother and sister to the opposite, Hammond was depicted as a nice guy in the movie but in the book he's a git and gets eaten by compies

I won't even talk about Quenn Of The Damned as it's IMO the absolute worst translation of a book in movie history :thumbsdow

If anyone is interested we were soliders (http://www.hmv.co.uk/servlet/HMVApp/ProductDetails.ProductDetails/product?productSKU=743979&sessionID=836453832878449542495396&m1=H&m2=&bskct=0&source=&sv=1) is £9.99 on the hmv site in the sale. I think p+p s a couple for quid though. I liked the movie, the first half was kinda boring, but once the action started it was great.

I got this movie from dddhouse.com recently & think it is a better than average war movie - dont expect BoB or SPR but it is based on a real story & pretty well told IMO
The R3 which has DTS & DD5.1 is widescreen but has no extras & cost $90 Hong Kong which is just over £7

the region 3 DTS track is stunning, the pre-battle artillery is a sub-killer if ever there was one!!

Theres a great deleted scene where the Gibson character explains to the generals why the war will never be won which should have been placed back in the film as its very relevant and a great little moment and ohhhhhh sub killers arggggg don't mention that please

you're right it was a good scene but its inclusion would have removed the cliff hanger ending when the taxi arrives at the home of Moore's wife.

i thought the deleted scene about the naked sarge was a classic!

yeah, has to be the best candidate for a deleted scene that should be reinstated for any movie I have.

I always show it to friends before we watch the movie, adds so much more to the apprehension about Sam Elliots character.
