Of the approximately two thousand eight hundred and ninety seven different formats that "Farscape" DVDs are available in, which would people recommend?

Depends on how much patience you have!
Ignore the R1. Hugely over priced and slowly being released as season boxes in R2.
If you have the patience find the box of Season 1 as you get the eight US commentaries (increasingly vital for later seasons plot complexities) and wait for Season 2 etc in the same format. If you can find these for around £60-70 you equal the 5 boxes per season original releases for price. Season 1 and 2 crop up at £12.50 a box regularly in HMV and Virgin. Season 3 has appeared a few times but will do so regularly soon.
Documentaries etc work out the roughly the same, although the titles change.
Ratio and sound is the same. No idea on PQ but never read anything poor about either.
Pays you emoney etc

The boxset Farscape Region 1 good price. Would the Region 4 be best though?

Is there actually any difference in content between the R1, R2 and R4 season one boxets? If not just buy the cheapest - short of a sale that would be R4 due to the exchange rate.

I have been buying them from Play.com as they are released for £17.99. Just started 4th Season, good price for the R2 double disk box set.

To buy the seperate 2 discs boxsets is quite expensive. Buy the whole season boxset-it's cheaper.

Is Farscape the UK editions all uncut or did our censors or even the distribution company remove scenes for a lower certificate as i recall it did get quite violent at times and might even have contained headbutts which our censors don't like, so is region 2 uncut ?

Hmph. How come you can buy a complete season of something like "Buffy" for about £30, but a complete season of "Farscape" costs £70? Not fair.:(

If the R2 UK versions (are) cut, is it possible the Australia editions are cut also?
Would that meant the R1 versions could be uncut?

Quick look on the BBFC shows no cuts on the first 25 entries, although the producers may be self-mutilating Skarrens and cut themselves!

Well, for better or worse I've ordered the Region 1 boxset of season 1 from DVD Pacific - comes to about £58 (ouch). You can get a Region 4 boxset of the whole of season 1 substantially cheaper, but they aren't quite the same: R1 has two episodes plus some extras on each of 11 discs, R4 has 4 episodes per disc, plus 2 and all the extras on the last one, making 6 discs in all. So far R4 sounds more sensible. But apparently the R1 version has some audio commentaries to the episodes (by cast members) which the R4 and R2 versions lack, and the R4 version also has video quality problems which the R1 and R2 versions avoid.
So, fingers crossed I haven't wasted £15.

I would probably go for the R1 boxset as well. Probably buy sometime, alot better than Star Trek.
btw, have Skarrens got microwaves in their right arm?

have Skarrens got microwaves in their right arm? They have heat glands. There is one episode where we meet one that's feeling very sorry for itself as its peacekeeper captors have had its heat glands removed....
Incidentally, I think it's spelt "Scarran".

It's a shame the show has been cancelled and that it was/is shown in ws on B2 but all the dvds are 4:3. Copies of B2 that have come from PCs show how much better it'd been if only the dvds had followed suit even at the boxset stage to rectify matters.
I believe seasons 1-3 were filmed in 4:3 , and 16:9 only commenced with season 4. I think this is mentioned on one of the extras somewhere.

Both R1 and R2 have the same commentaries as far as I can see but good price NicholasB. Cheapest I've seen R2 is £80. I would be interested in hearing what you think of the commenatries as I bought the original R2 releases.

Hi,
I can assure people that NONE of the Region 2 "Farscape" episodes have been cut AT ALL, either by the BBFC or the distribution company themselves.
Also, BBC2 are showing Season 4 in Widescreen. The first three were never filmed in Widescreen.

No doubt there is some extremely sinister reason for it that I will discover in due course.... :god:

Maybe they are in fact VCD, taken from a VHS copy that's been copied 10 times?
Got you worring now!

Incidentally, for those who can't be bothered to use www.dvdpricecheck.co.uk you can get the R4 (australian) version from (for example) Planet DVD (http://www.planetdvd.com.au/dvdinf.asp?i=3058&cs=22521IOOGNAEUXUAU) for about £44.
