Hi guttersnipez
If it's running fine and your happy,is there a need?
Here's some info on the difference between the Xe1 & EP35.
Toshiba HD-XE1 vs. HD-EP35
EDIT: From what i've read there's no difference in PQ from the Xa1 and the current gen of players.

The XA1 is a good player and whilst the XE1/EP35 offer 24p output your display doesn't support it. I believe the newer players are also quicker but unless that's an issue I would stick with the XA1.

I own both formats and have no plans to ditch my HD DVD player.

Re: worth upgrading hd-dvd player

XE-1 is a fine machine . You could always keep your old player as backup and also for SD upscaling especially if you have aa 2nd tv ??

Re: worth upgrading hd-dvd player

guttersnipez,

I upgraded from an XA1 to XE1. From a core performance perspective they are much of a muchness. Operation is nigh on identical (menus, PQ, AQ). What the XE1 does offer on top though is:
- 1080p/24 output
- HD DVD 50Hz Support
- Digital Audio Bitstream Output (including DTS-HD MA)
- A slimmer chasis
- R2 DVD Playback (including quality upscaling)

Is it worth upgrading? Personally I think so. The current trend is for HD DVD users to run around screaming "the format's dead". Well if it is this machine will serve you well for years - the digital audio output and 1080p/24 output means you will be able to get the maximium from current and future HD DVD discs for years to come - it's as future-proofed as it can be IMHO.

And despite being slow it does a sterling job. With Toshiba now going towards budget decks in order to push the format, the XE1 could be the closest thing to a 'high end' HD DVD player we'll see. Personally I doubt that - I think we'll see some high end dual players over the next couple of years - but, aside from being slow, the XE1 will drive your HD DVD collection to great effect.

Re: worth upgrading hd-dvd player

When you take the XE1 out of the box you just know it is a top performer just by the weight, it is so damn heavy, built to last!

Buy one with confidence mate.

The Toshiba store at Cheshire Oaks outlet village had the XE1 for £349 a few days ago when I visited.
