Which projector would provide the best picture a Sony VPH-1292 or VW-60 or JVC HD1

Hi,

Not sure if this should be in the CRT or DLP forum, so here goes....
Please can anyone offer an objective opinion as to which of these projectors would provide the best picture.
A Sony VPH-1292 or Sony VW-60 or JVC HD1

Thanks very much
Lance

Re: Which projector would provide the best picture a Sony VPH-1292 or VW-60?

well assuming a normal 96" wide screen, the 1292 easilly. However, the 1292 is a loud beast of a machine and has some potentially unrepairable design problems in the video chain. I would say a better choice would be a sony G70 which was the last generation of CRT's from sony and replaced the 1272/1292. Another poster on AVS just switched back to a G70 after living with a pearl for 7 months.

OF course you will get different opinions on the DLP forum but I have seen both of these machines in action doing HD and I thought the Pearl was a mediocre peformer at best.

Lance,

I could be convinced to part with a G70 if you're interested? Can demo and I'm only a short way up the A11 from you...

the one thing I forgot to add is that in order to get 100% performace out of the 1292,G70, G90 or any other Sony CRT, the the moome internal HDMI input card is a must. They're not cheap at $435. but there is really no better way to get HDMI to a CRT. Another batch of cards is being built and will be available in Feb. These things sell out really fast so, if you decide to get that machine from Ed, you might want to pre-order now?

Thanks for the replies chaps, I've seen some screen shots of the Pearl and thought it looked quite good.

Thanks for the advice.
I saw that they were back in stock, wonder how long it will be before Moome has the full-hd cards available.
A G90 would be great but they seem very expensive and rare, especially here in the UK.

not sure what you mean by "full HD cards" . I bought an HDMI card from him for my Marquee end of 2007 and it's about as HD as you can possibly get.

Re: Which projector would provide the best picture a Sony VPH-1292 or VW-60?

i guess I need to check his forum more often, I missed that post. I wonder why this card is "full HD", is it the extra port? It would seem to me that it's easier to have an HDMI switcher back at the source end of things instead of running two 20 foot cables all the way to the PJ no?
edit: looks like somethng to do with compliance on Sony HDCP. why am I not surprised?

Lance - if you want to compare a HD1 with a Marquee 8500/9500 then there are ways and means if you take a trip to Norwich.

Why the 1292? Or have you been offered a decent deal on one?

Did you get the 1292?

Or is it still for sale somewhere?

Yeah, but it has its problems. Bought for spares really.

MAD: I notice you've reduced your 1209 - now do you believe me when I maintain that the bottom is falling / has already fallen out of the CRT market?

I think the CRT market will return but we’ll have to wait for the supply to totally dry up and then only the true connoisseurs will pay a decent price for them. For example, back in the late 70’s I was buying Quad II amps in good condition for 30 quid, now they’re selling on Ebay for well over 500 quid – wish I’d kept mine now!

funny, I just bought a set of Quad 22L speakers last year and they are not all that easy to find here, Never tried their amps though. I also bought a Linn LP12 about 3 years ago that's worth 20% more now.
From my perespectibe of selling almost exclusivley in the states, prices have only dropped by 10% or 15% over the last 3 years. Thanks to Moome and direct HDMI feeds ,which have taken CRT performance to new level, the interest is still there. However CRT prices are impossible to predict, if Pannasonic stops making tubes they will be worth almost nothing.
