HDMI Cables!
I dont understand why when i go in Currys to get an HDMI cable all they try and sell me a £99 Monster HDMI Cable!
Telling me it improves the picture quality!
Its a DIGITAL CABLE, how can it improve the picture, ones and zeros go in and the same ones and zeros come out the other end. It has a computer at each end! If it didn't get the correct ones and zeros then you wouldn't get a picture! It does a checksum on the data if it doesn't get the correct ones and zeros it sends them again. So you always get perfect picture. Simple.
I can understand having a better cable for a longer distance as 1080p is lots of data and you want as little drop out as poss but over 1m!
I got a £20 HDMI from maplin in the end and picture is perfect.

Re: HDMI Cables!
Yes, same thing has happened to me. I didnt even get into a discussion with them, just said no thanks. Got a 1m one off ebay for less than £5 which works fine on 1080p/Blu-ray.

I'm going to hazard a guess and say it's because they are trying to make money.
That and the more 3D image you'll inevitably get..

Whilst you are absolutely right about rip-off HDMI cables, I'm fairly sure there is no error correcting over HDMI in the way that you describe (and no, or very little, forward error correcting either, at least on video). In extremis, dropouts and sparklies can occur. These will be very obvious, and are the only possible manifestations of a cable that fails to meet the required specification.
