HDD advice

Hello all,

just wondering if any one has recommendations for a large (160GB+) quiet HDD for storage for my HCPC???

a freind recommended a seagate barricuda V - Is this the way forward?? - what are you chaps using??

I have a variety of Seagate Barracuda's. The oldest being at least 2 years and still no problems and still pretty quiet, though not quite as quiet as my newest drive.

Do the Barracuda's got to 160Gb? The last one I got was a 120Gb.

WD seem pretty good, IBM are good drives as well.

Seagate make the best IDE drives on the planet. Both Baracuda IV's and V's are superb.

I would NEVER buy another IBM after BOTH my IBM 40GB deskstars stoped working.

I now use seagates.

I have 10 yra old Seagate drives that are still going great guns :) 120mb not a lot of use these days tho'!

As for modern large drives, I have 2 200gb Western Digital SE (8mb cache) drives and they're pretty quiet.

Provided they work the IBM drives are great. I've got a 30Gb 60GXP drive from 2 years ago and it works fine, not had a problem.

I'd be tempted to go for a S-ATA 150 drive now though, if it's an option.

The early IBM 7200 HD's had problems- sometimes it was due to poor ventilation, people weren't using hd coolers.

Quantium used to be good- heard they've gone downhill though?

I have never come across a old working seagate.

S-ATA hasn't been finalized yet, still bugs with it. I'ld leave a while until sorted out.

Little or no improvement on S-ATA over 80 pin IDE, apart from slimmer wires (and the max bandwidth means nothing, since the drive iteself cannot retreive 150MB/sec continious)

segate do make some of the best ide drives you can buy. there barracuda IV and V's are very quiet and reliable.
as everybody lese has said, stay away any ibm drive under 120gxp (the 120 and upward dont have the 'click of death' problems

seagate, maxtor and western digial all make excellent drives. the wd are the fastest, while the seagate are the quietest. i have found that the maxtors offer a good balance between the two.

I'm currently running 2x 80gb Seagate Barracudas in a mirrored raid and I'd hardly describe them as pants. They're fast, quiet, reliable and I'd have no hesitation in recommending them.

I also have another seagate (20gb) thats been going for about 5 years without a problems :smashin:

Maxtor's are pretty good...and pretty quiet with their fluid bearings.

Think they go up to around 200GB with their DiamondMax 9 range, and are available in both ATA and S-ATA flavours.

I've got three at the moment...one in my PC, one in my Sky+ box and One i my MP3 player.

I've also never had a problem with any IBM drive...perhaps I've just been lucky.

I have an 80Gig Seagate which has been superb performance and noise wise. I also have an 80Gig WD (8MB cache) and I'm not so impressed with that one. It seems noisier and on my system slower than the Seagate. I did have a 40Gig IBM but that failed after a few months.
My next drive will almost definately be a Seagate

I just bought an external maxtor 250GB drive, connected using USB 2.0. It is ideal for storing media such as films, mp3's.

Works out as a £1 a Gig
