View Full Version : Good Network Media players
Hi, im trying to digitally store all of my music and DVDs, i have all the music on a computer and can access it via a sonos system. What i need to do now i find a way of storing all of my DVDs on a network drive and be able to choose the film i want to watch from my TV, anyone know of a easy, cheapish way of doing this? Thanks
You could go the expensive route and get a Windows Media Center PC (great interface, not so good usage) or get a simple NAS box and something like a Showcenter 200/Snazio or wahtever DLNA compat. box and stream everything to your TV/Plasma/whatever...

Most of the media players discussed on this section will go some way towards what you want to achieve. If you could give some idea if file types that you want to play we should be able to come up with some suggestions.
Well i just want to rip to dvds to a hard drive on a media server, dont care about file types but wud preferably like to keep the menus. If anyone could suggest good entry level media servers that would be great. Preferably with the specs that would allow me to add more storage space if i needed.
Would i be able to achieve this by using something like the HP MediaSmart Server EX475?

Would say Popcorn Hour is the most bang for your buck, Tvix 6500 will also be nice but is more expensive.

Good luck trying to get hold of one - the supply of these is VERY limited from what I read when I was looking for a media player.
When I was looking around the EVA8000 seemed to get okay reviews for an entry level device, and I seem to remember it works with ISOs so you can keep the menus
I have a KISS 1600, which doesn't read ISOs so would not fit your needs. Fine for me though as compatibilty with file lots of different file types was why I bought it (and it's pretty cheap).

I can confirm the the EVA8000 works well with ISO's (including menues and subtitles). Also MKV playback is supported

I have just brought the HP Media centre, and its going back as I have spent best part of a day trying to set it up. The unit keeped telling me that I needed to reset the media devise, which took over an hour each time and made no difference.
I brought it because I have the sonos system being delivered tomorrow, guess I will have to use it dirrectly from the PC for now.

If you are having a Sonos, and you have a PC, why on earth would you want an HP Media Center?

The EVA8000 can stream 1080p H.264 MKV films at decent bitrates (12-15k+)?

Was that a question, or a statement?
