Thomson DTI6300 - Too noisy - disable fan?

I've just bought a Thomson DTI6300-16 and it's incredibly noisy compared to my previous PVR.

The fan is on constantly, even in standby mode and it's quite loud.

I've heard reports of people disabling the fan - is this safe to do?

Could I slap a resistor into the equation to reduce the speed of the fan perhaps?

Any suggestions on how to go about reducing the noice would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

Thanks for the heads up on that. I was hoping they learnt their lesson with their previous model (the DHD 4000, internally an entirely different machine).

Which also originally did the same thing but they later added a hidden option to turn the fan off in standby. I guess it's "possible" they've done the same here.

Here is the info on their old PVR:

And here how to find the hidden Technical Menu (under "Running out of disk space?"):

Thanks bradavon78 - I'll give those hidden menus a go tonight.

The fan noise is fine when you're watching something, I just find the constant hum in my lounge annoying If I'm sitting reading for instance.

Place the machine on a cut piece of thin rubber car mat - or suction cups.

I presume you mean DHD 4000? I bet the fan option is simply enabled in the hidden menu then.

Unless it was done by the manufacturer I haven't done it. I didn't know about the menu until your post.

Re: Thomson DTI6300 - Too noisy - disable fan?

It could've been. The fan on in standby was very unpopular. When did you buy it?

Check it. It's dead easy to access the hidden menu and won't do any harm whatsoever.

It also gives you the option to clear the EPG, format the hard disk and even run a Short or Long Hard Disk test. Oh and it will tell you the temperature of the unit. In my case that was faulty it was always at 100c which is obviously wrong. It passed the short hard disk test fine, it only took about 2 minutes. I don't think I ever tried the long hard disk test.
