Advice and Help required?

HI all,

I have a Pioneer AV Amp which has a Sub Line Out and have recently managed to acquire a set of speakers for the 5.1 effect from a faulty Sony S500DAV unit. The problem i have is the the Sony Sub is a Passive unit also..

Is there any way i can sort an in line amp for this sub or am i just best off ditching the sub and buying an Active one instead? This is all being done on a VERY tight budget (hence the mix and match components) and the size of the sony sub is ideal as it will slot down the back of the furniture with no interference.

Thanks

Re: Advice and Help required?

For a really tight budget, Richersounds do a powered sub for £70

Or you could use a cheap amp to power what Sub you have.

again, richer sounds do one for £50

I cant comment on how it would sound all tied together, but if its cheap you're after...

Bear in mind if you went down the amping your sub route, a single channel amp would be better if you can find one, as the amp i pointed you at would be stereo.

Personally on a tight budget, I would go for a cheap powered sub.

Re: Advice and Help required?

Thanks alun.. I saw a couple of ebay jobbies that were clearance due to blemishes/scratches etc and i think i might get one of them (only £20 and they are local so can collect) plus its an active unit so i guess it eliminates the need for an additional Amp, (which i might struggle to find room for admittedly).

I did wonder if there was any way of using a Car Amp at all, but think that this may be too difficult to wire in properly.

Re: Advice and Help required?

You would be ableto use a car amp, the difficulty you would have there is finding a good enough 12V supply to power it. For a 50W amp you would need a mains adapter capable of supplying at least 5amps, and then it would have to be a pretty clean supply or you would pick up the mains hum instantly.

2 things spring to mind, a PC power supply, or possibly a laptop supply.

neither of them particularly tidy solutions mind!

But £20 for a powered sub seems like the way to go!

Cheers,

Alun
