Question 3rd Generation iPod Charger Required - HELP

Hello all

Been given a 3rd Generation iPod by my Brother who's recently bought a newer model. Thing is, he's literally lost every cable! ie I currenly have no way of connecting it to my PC or charging it. (Just to really annoy me, he did still have the box though! ).
It still looks in really good condition and given it's a 20Gb model I'd like to make use of it. Can anyone suggest where I can at least get the charger becuase it's driving me nuts!
So far I've bought and returned 3 purchases to Comet and Currys because none of them would work on a 3rd generations model. Even 'Griffin' which seem to be a reputable company for accessories don't seem to do anything compatible

Starting to wonder if it's worth the bother given the difficulty I'm having and the possible cost of all the accessories. From I can gather the model simply doesn't charge from USB either, ie requires firewire.

Thanks

If you can't find it in an online shop,

Ebay or try starting a wanted ad on the classified section of the forum

Unlike more recent iPods, the 3G models charge and sync via Firewire NOT USB2.

You can still buy 3rd party chargers on EBay etc, or Apple still sell the separate firewire - iPod leads and charger plugs.

I have a spare Apple charger plug + Firewire lead if you are interested?

Re: 3rd Generation iPod Charger Required - HELP

Thank you both for your help, - I apperciate it.

I managed to figure out in the end that it basically boiled down to what Greggles said, in that the 3rd generation ipod was geared up for Firewire as oppose to USB. Hence most of the 3rd party USB chargers wouldn't work. The annoying part was how little information was on the packaging about this though, ie which models the chargers were designed for.

Yesterday I managed to get sorted anyway; Found a compatible 'mains charger' and also a combined 'USB/Firewire - Dock Connector Cable'. ie I can now charge and sync the iPod.
Got them both at Maplin which I guess is maybe the first place I should have thought of for obscure cables!

The final thing I'm looking to buy is an iTrip and car charger. Given all the issues I've had in sourcing chargers so far, I'd have preferred the original model of Griffin iTrip - ie the old cylinder shaped one which plugs in the top headphone socket and leaves the bottom dock connector free for charging.
Looks like I might struggle to find one of these now though unless anyone knows any different? They are available on a few oscure websites but I was hoping to get one for Christmas and therefore would have preferred a high street store...

Ahhhh....The 3 Gen chargers are firewire and not like the new usb ones thats it, they also have a different location for the docking connection. The one thing I liked about my old 3 Gen was that the charger cable was 2 cables. One was USB and the other firewire. This was the official cable from apple at the time......they have now removed this cable.

I now have new dock beside my tv that i used for my 5 Gen, I no longer can connect to my computer update albums, switch my computer off and still charge without having to move the ipod to the other dock. The 3 Gen was able to do this without any issues

++ If you want I have a 'free' official ipod remote that only works on a 3 Gen. It will allow you to pause/play ect while on the move. If you want I can post it to you after xmas. ++

That sounds like the exact cable I bought from Maplin yesterday! Has the dock style ipod connector on one end, then the cables splits into 2; 1 USB and 1 Firewire. Does seem spot on so far like.

I've PM'd you about the remote offer.
