Yup, CDex for ripping.

I personally use Album Art Aggregator for collating the album art and Winamp as my media player which allows sync to my Ipod too. There's loads of options around for those that don't really want to use itunes.

That work with the latest generation (classic etc)?

use EAC, cDex or DBpowerAMP for ripping, but i think you will still need iTunes to transfer reliably to the latest iPods.

Re: Recomend an alternative to itunes

Version 3.02 of the ml_ipod plugin for Winamp supports the new Ipods. It should also work with Mediamonkey if you prefer that interface.
http://mlipod.sourceforge.net/

You'll have to add it yourself though as the default ipod support through Winamp is a bit backwards.

Does it work with album art, podcasts etc? Any limitations? Even with older versions there were a few limitations.

Re: Recomend an alternative to itunes

The latest version of Winamp incorporates album art and there are certainly plugins to go with it. I've never really used iTunes so it's hard to say how well it compares directly, I'd assume podcasts to be a bit more of a pain.

Essentially, I started using Winamp 8 years ago and have never had any motivation to change media player since it does all I want and I very much like the Media Library it has; I'm not specifically anti-iTunes. I can't imagine it doing everything quite the same way iTunes does but I guess it depends what you want out of it, Winamp can certainly handle podcasts in some manner.

Re: Recomend an alternative to itunes

If you want "perfect" rips use EAC (exact audio copy)
Can I ask why you need an alternative? What's wrong with iTunes for you?
