ive got a panasonic ae700 lcd projector which is great for games but when it comes to films the night time scenes are spoiled by the lack of deep blacks, im looking to buy a good crt projector next year, which would you reccomend for hd movies and games?

Re: reccomend me a crt projector

Forum member Barcoed has a Sony G70 that might be just right for you. For less than a grand you'll get a stunning image from HD at 1080i & 720p

Regards

Re: reccomend me a crt projector

Hi, Where in the UK are you?

There are Barco 1209 and 1209s units for sale on a well known auction site .

I know the 1209 there will sell for £1750

Thats got to be a cheap route into the 9" top of the range CRT projectors.

I was waiting until after Christmas but I will be selling the 1209s on my ceiling. going for the worlds best CRT projector the Cine9

Your welcome to view to see what a CRT can do, I only watch HD movies.

Im currently looking after a Graphics 1209s with ONLY 1200 hours on original tubes, Chassis is also 1200 hours - I believe thats probably the youngest 1209s available in the world! .

The very top of the range is a Cine9 from Barco - Again after Christmas there will be one of those available.

Should you want any of the above I will be happy to setup a for sale thread on the forum.

Re: reccomend me a crt projector

If on a tight budget, look for an 8" em focused machine. Marquee 7500,8500, Sony G70 or Barco Graphics 808s. In general, go for the best preserved machine of whatever make - a good M7500 is better than a turkey 808s or vice-versa! Certainly decent Marquees are available and well supported with spares.

If you have a bigger budget, then a 1209s is a smashing PJ, as is the M9500LC Ultra. Again, look for a good machine from a decent reliable source....not something from an unknown source on an auction site that might have had its guts flogged out.

You can do worse than purchase from a genuine enthusiast.

Re: reccomend me a crt projector

If you are looking for an 8 inch Barco 1208s/2 or Barco 9 inch versions from 1209 , 1209s up to Cine9 then I can setup a for sale thread in the for sale section of the forum.

We keep for sale items in the correct section as it gives buyer and seller protection and follows the forum rules .

Where in the UK are you based ?

For auction sites - Cash on collection is the best option as you get to see the item and check it over.

Re: reccomend me a crt projector

Good 8" and 9" machines will eat 1080i and 720p @ 50/60Hz (....with the caveat that timings of 50Hz HD signals can be problematic due to odd porches. I use a video processor to get things right)

For 1080p, 9" is the best bet, but 8" machines can look very good. If you want to display at 72/75Hz (and this normally means a decent video processor is in the loop..more money!), then you're beginning to push the bandwidth of the electronics. But keen enthusiasts tend to mod their machines to cope. (+I cheat a little, as many HD DVDs are framed at 2.4:1, i.e. roughly 816 scan lines not 1080p, so I set the VP to pixel map to 1920x816 @72 or 75Hz, thus avoiding wasting bandwidth on sending black bars.)

A grand will buy you a decent Marquee 7500. I'm not sure what Barco 808s go for these days.

Re: reccomend me a crt projector

I would also recommend the 8" CRT for upto 720p or with nice clean tubes 840p, it looks great on a Barco 1208 with low hours.

Well tweaked Marquee 8500 can do 1080p and there are mods to help.More cash though.

I recently picked up a 2500hr Barco BG1208 on the for sale forum for £300 a great deal, quite heavy though, aren't they all...

My first PJ was a SONY 1272 4400 hrs bought for £50 and that was quite good even with 720p considering its an ES set.

My BG808 is over 10k hours and is ok but less bright and has some noticible wear.

A decent looking BG808 sold on a certain auction site recently for only £240!!

EM Focusiing sets are sharper, such as the Barco's or marquee's

The physical size of these Projectors is a shock if you have'nt seen one in the flesh...

Many sales are pick up only and not on your doorstep unless luicky...

Have you seen a CRT projector in action?

What's your time frame for purchase?

As stated by audimushroom "The physical size of these Projectors is a shock if you have'nt seen one in the flesh..."

If I've still got mine when you're ready I'm only 25-30 miles from you and you'd be welcome to take a look.
