EP35 - analog sub LFE volume level ?

Hi there,

I'm setting my new Toshiba EP35 up to connect into my Naim AV2 processor using the 5.1 analog ouputs. Could of issues I seem to be having with it are:

* When doing test tones, it moves off from one to the next so fast it's difficult to get a proper SPL reading. Is there a way to get it to hold onto a single channel ?

* Using the 5.1 analog, the LFE (sub) channel is very low in volume level, up to 20db below the rest of the channels. I have lowered all the other channels relative to it, but it seems to lower the channel outputs, rather than increase the sub, which would be better ? Anyone managed to fix this, do Toshiba regard this as a bug ?

Also, would anyone have their recommended settings for using it with analog 5.1 ouputs, there seem to be a few settings on the HDMI interface that need disabled/tweaked to allow you to get the proper audio out the analog interface.

Thanks,
Roy.

Re: EP35 - analog sub LFE volume level ?

If your Amplifier allows it on the Analogue inputs set the LFE level higher on the Amplifier, I set mine to +10db & later to +15db & set up the EP35 relative to distance/sound tests. My Amplifier allows independent adjustment of the LFE Ext. 5.1 inputs so the increase does not affect the normal optical/ coax inputs.

Re: EP35 - analog sub LFE volume level ?

You can get it to repeat the test tone to an individual speaker by pressing the left arrow button to make it "go back" to the previous speaker. This doesn't prolong the tone, as such, just lets you make multiple instances of tone to one speaker to get an average reading, before moving to the next one.

Also, as regards people saying their LFE channel is so low, I have to say that I've not found this to be the case so much. My recollection is that when using an SPL meter you have to change a setting on the meter itself when checking LFE. It's sufficiently long ago since I last used my SPL meter that I may have got the whole thing back to front, but I'm sure that - if you are using the "favourite" RAdioshack SPL - you change from "A weighting" to "C Weighting" when checking LFE, don't you?

Now, it's entirely possible that I am the one who has goofed here (eg by not changing from A -> C or getting it the wrong way around) but I haven't seen as much of a difference between LFE and other channels as a lot of you are reporting.

Re: EP35 - analog sub LFE volume level ?

I always have my spl meter on C..?

I thought Transformers was very light on LFE, should I set the speaker levels on analogue to -12db and leave the LFE on 0?

Re: EP35 - analog sub LFE volume level ?

It's common for 5.1 analogue outputs to have a -10db cut on the LFE channel.

Many amps including most Denons from around 2003 allow you to set the 5.1 LFE input level seperate to any other settings. On the Denons it's in the main menu under EXT. IN LFE Level.

Cheers
Lee

Re: EP35 - analog sub LFE volume level ?

Thanks Lee,

Looks like that's it, the analog's about -10db below the other channels. Guess I could drop the other channels by 10db in the HD-DVD player, but that'll probably effect the SNR on all the outputs.

I'll see what naim say to it on Monday if the LFE on analog multi in can be altered ?

Roy.

Re: EP35 - analog sub LFE volume level ?

I've just had a re-read of the "how to use your SPL meter" thread from the Subwoofer forum (LINK) to check I was doing it right and - broadly speaking I was.

So, I went back to re-calibrate my levels on the EP35 again, just for sanity sake...

All my channels are within 1 or 2 dB of each other, if anything my subwoofer is actually slightly higher than other channels.

Re: EP35 - analog sub LFE volume level ?

Just a thought.
I'm considering this as a future purchase.
Once connected by the analoge leads, does that work for all sound out from then on, including SD-DVD playback also ?
i.e. no need for optical or coax. out ?

Correct. Once you've hooked up the analog leads, the EP35 can use these for SD and HD DVDs. You don't need an optical out (there is no coax out)
