Sky+ Box dying

My v1 Pace Sky+ box (which I upgraded many years ago to 160GB) appears to be dying.
I had a near terminal experience earlier where I had to scrub the hard disc to revive it, and it had another minor crash after where I could hear the disc crunching away, and a couple of recordings were lost.
With the big footy matches on tomorrow, I (and the wife) are a bit worried we will be without Sky full stop.

I think it's about time I upgraded to more recent technology, but given that my TV is 12 years old, I can't see the point in HD just yet.

What SD alternatives are there - we love Sky+, I just want to buy a Sky+ box with a lot of recording space on a box that won't go wrong at a reasonable price as I am likely to upgrade to HD in a couple of years?

Any suggestions?

Why not just replace the HDD again...it's about the only thing which gives trouble in them.
