The Monolith is a cracker, and a steal. I installed one at a mates in the summer and it is awesome.

Re: Rel r505, monolith or rel storm 5
If your room is big enough, then go for the Monolith. I had the ff version and it just couldn't match with my room. I got the 305 REL a few months later and that was far better, in my room. The thing about the REL ST range (Stadium and up not withstanding) is that the internal volume is halved diagonally, so the cabinet size isn't nearly as big as you'd suspect. If it were me, then I would go for 2x XLS300's, if you are willing to spend 505 money and have some space to spare. Also, there are some M&K deals to be had - if you aren't too bothered about simultaneous high/low connections.

So if the 305 was better than the monolith then surely the 505 would be a better choice if your were buying ex demo for the same money.

He didn't say it was better than the Monolith, he said it was better in his room.
From this, you cannot draw the conclusion that either the 305 and especially the 505 (as it is a different sub) would be better in your room. Unless your rooms share dimensions, physical construction AND layout, it's entirely possible that varying any one of those constants would result in significantly different in room results.
For instance, you wouldn't give a fig for the sound of a Monolith in my room if I had to sit two feet to the right of where I actually do, but as I don't it works extremely well.
The general rule of thumb is that a bigger box and driver combination will offer lower distortion at higher SPLs for less money, but that is with respect to postioning it correctly in your room. Smaller sealed boxes offer more positioning opportunities which hands them an advantage if the room is awkward, but ultimately given optimum positioning for either, the big box will always win.
This is true if you were considering a Stadium against a 3/505 without a Monolith in sight.
