It looks as though it may be an 'Perfect 12' which is housed in the enclosure. If it is i'd say go for it as a mate had a Perfect 10 in a sealed enclosure which was a fine sub and iirc it cost him around £80 for the speaker it's self.

Go for it, that is a Infinity Perfect 12, they are great sounding subwoofers.

I got the Perfect 10 when it first came out and it is still sounding great over 2 and a half years later.

Give the sub a good amount of power to shine, I recommend about 400 watts rms.

Any questions just ask.

The advertised 300 watt rms is a very conservative rating.

I have run the Prefect 10 with 280 rms and it can take quite a fair bit more.

In the original Infinity white papers the Infinity Perfect 10 and the 12 were powered with 350 and 400 watts RMS amplifiers, I have known people use up to 600 wrms on tap this works fine, as long as the power is was clean, max excursion was watched and the enclosure used was not bigger than 1 cubic foot.

400 watts RMS should be right for decent clean SPL's of around 125-135 db from 20hz to 80 hz in most cars depending on the cars transfer function.

In general as a sealed enclosure gets bigger the power handling of a subwoofer falls but low bass extention is increased.

How much are you willing to spend on a subwoofer amplifier?

An amplifer which provides 400-500 rms will normally set you aound £250-£350.

You want a amplifer that puts out decent power at 4 ohms normally this would be a two channel amplifier bridged to mono.

I have found these at the Car Audio Direct website, these amplifers would be the ones I would consider for some good output.

A Directed 2400 for £279 pounds.

OR

A Lightning Audio s2.400.2 for £259.
A Lightning Audio s2.600.2 for £359.

OR

Rockford Fosgate Punch 500S for £299
Rockford Fosgate Power 350S for £299
Rockford Fosgate Power 550s at £349.

If you have any other questions or queries don't hesitate to ask.

I was already going to get a Phoenix Gold QX300.1 4 channel to power my front 17cm comps and rear 17cms...

do you mean I need one of those amps (that you gave a link for) just for the sub itself!?

I've been told to use a crossover with the h/u and to use the Phoenix Gold to power the fronts and bridge it for the rears/ sub

You can bridge the rear channels of the amplifier, but doing this does not really give the power to run both the rear speakers and the Subwoofer to anyway neer their potential.

You also run into problems with the sensitivity difference of the rear speakers and subwoofer.

The subwoofer will sound much better with a dedicated amplifier.

To get the most out of your sound system you need a 4 channel amplifier for front and rear speakers, and a seperate subwoofer amplifer for the subwoofer.

If you want matching Phoenix Gold amps for both speakers and subwoofer, a Phoenix Gold QX350.2 would power the Perfect 12 nicely at £259.

actually , I was going to use my Alpine 7894 h/u to power the rears with a crossover and let the Phoenix Gold handle the fronts and sub... how does that sound?

you might want to try these guys

http://www.cel-direct.com/

i bought my headunit off them last year, their prices were AT LEAST £100 cheaper than elsewhere. I ordered on a friday lunchtime and the headunit was at my door at 7.30am the next morning. They also answer emails fairly quickly.
