The Original The Haunting http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0057129/ for horror.
For suspense that are on the dark side Defence of the Realm and Hidden Agenda , thinking about it there political thrillers but fit you criteria for suspense

Dario Argento's Suspiria
The feeling of dread you get from this film is just immense.
And it has the best score of any horror movie.
Session 9.
Another one that makes you feel uneasy.
if you don't mind subtitles I would recommend pan's labyrinth, very creepy.
and of course it goes without saying that bram stoker's dracula comes under the dark, mysterious and eerie banner.

links - underlined.
Another subtitled french movie - Them (http://www.bbc.co.uk/films/2007/01/22/them_2007_review.shtml), creates great atmosphere.
Dead End (http://uk.rottentomatoes.com/m/10003925-dead_end/) is another creepy (http://www.bbc.co.uk/films/2003/11/28/dead_end_2003_review.shtml) horror.
.
Supernatural (The TV Series) is a good one.

I'd agree with Pans Labarynth too, beautiful is a word I would use to describe it.
But it is dark, mysterious and eerie.

I realise it wasn’t well received but Silent Hill unnerves me, particularly the scene involving immolation. I thought that scene was brutal.
The on screen arrival of pyramid head was also quite disturbing, and one scene involving him and a woman who is betrayed by her acquaintances was pretty shocking.
The cinematography is good, too. In particular, the constant drizzle of ash – presumably the charred remains of humans who have been dispatched to 7th circle of hell – and the fog that sits eerily still, both augment the film’s creepy atmosphere.
It is going to be one of the first movies that I watch on Blu-Ray.
I hope you get the opportunity to see it and that you enjoy it as much as I have.
