Sensor sizes of compacts etc.

The Canon G9 is stated as having a '1/1.7" sensor' according to their website, does this mean .58" approx as I assume, seems an odd way to descibe it? How does this compare to other compact cameras and bridge cameras? I'm aware dSLR's are significantly larger.

Re: Sensor sizes of compacts etc.

Yes, very useful info Rob, but how does 1/1.7" relate to the actual size shown, am I missing something? Also I take it that most compacts etc have the 'even smaller' size sensors.
Thanks
