I like this....

telling Variety, "With the overwhelming role technology plays in our daily lives, the growing gap between rich and poor, including the gradual elimination of the middle class, the story of Metropolis is a frightening reflection of our society that takes place in an all-too-possible not-too-distant future."

but really this could go either way, one foot wrong and they'll annoy a lot of people, myself included.

It's a brilliant film that shouldn't be remade but can I ask on what level may a remake annoy you?

All the best

what about the millions of people who have not seen the original (that goes for any film), so todays 16-25 (rough age), want to see a updated movie with the latest fx and stars, doesnt make it right, but not wrong ethier, there's a huge market out there for the studios.

I dont think Metropolis is a name that gurantees huge box office sales, so i assume they have a good updated story. For all the fans of the original - you still have your original to love and hold. And bad or good remakes dont really hurt the classic originals.

As you say it's a brilliant film, it was way ahead of it's time both sociologically and in terms of special effects. To emulate the first this would have to continue in that same vein, and I would hope that the social implications of todays modern world would be addressed as opposed to just pumping in as many CGI effects as possible.

If it didn't it would annoy me.

Unfortunately not. Unless something turns up there's not a complete version available.:(

I would love to see a version of the original with the Jeff Mills soundtrack over the top:

http://www.amazon.com/Metropolis-Jeff-Mills/dp/B00004Z52I/ref=m_art_li_3

The music is sublimely perfect for the film, but I cannot find a copy anywhere that already has his alternative soundtrack!

Hi,

I think that the average cinema-going youth of today won't have heard of "Metropolis" or of Fritz Lang for that matter, and will probably think that it's something to do with Superman. As such, the people who do know of this film, are probably - like me - a bit shocked and annoyed that once again, Hollywood feels it has to remake a superb movie, and bludgen us to death with state-of-the-art CGI effects, in order to make us go and watch it.

This is one of those movies that should not be remade, simply because it was years ahead of its time, and even using the most incredible effects now, the remake won't offer modern-day audiences anything better that the original couldn't improve upon, apart from the fact it will be in colour, and made with well-known cast members.

Why can't Hollywood stop remaking everything, because in almost every instance, it's a complete bastardisation of the original, and hardly anyone says that the remake was worthwhile?! :suicide:

Hell, if kids need to see a colourised "modern" version of the movie, why don't they rent or buy the 1984 "reimagining" of "Metropolis", which Giorgio Moroder did?! Many don't like this version, though I do, but it's not necessary to remake the whole movie again, just to encourage new audiences to see it. If you want them to see it, promote the original, and get prints of it out into the big screens! Now that would be awesome!

Fritz Lang will be turning in his grave, hearing this sad and sorry news! :nono: I really hope the remake fails miserably!

Remake it, it's old, and outdated. Biplanes are not the future. Silver ladies will do just fine!!!

I think I might have a version of this. I got a free VHS once with a soundtrack not unlike this and then bought a DVD with the same one. I wasn't too keen on it. I'll see if can dig it out to check.

Variety report on the possible remake.

Check the bit on it's influence on other films. Dispite the photo there's no mention of Stars Wars.

I think it is best not to copy other films, but Kill Bill did a good job with the Enter The Dragon outfit.

I'd say homage rather than copy in that case.

Hi,

To make it really modern, one scene will need only a minor modification:

There's an early scene in which Lang shows two lanes of workers: one lane finishing their shift, whislt another lane of workers starts their shift. Instead of having "underground workers", we simply replace the "Starting Shift" lane with dole-scum morons, and the "Exiting Shift" lane, with loads of up-the-duff chav women wearing bling rings, and chav-men in their burberry caps and two-stripe chav-pants! :rotfl:

I'll go with that - I'm 26 in a couple weeks, and I've never heard of the film, and have no idea when the original was made.... Unless I look it up on imdb mind.....

With live music, please (impractical, I know, but a great experience -- have any of you seen a silent film accompanied by a complete orchestra?)

Sorry to get you so excited. Paulie_D's probabaly right plus I'm having trouble finding it. I've found my two disc version with the "origional soundtrack" but have yet to find the other DVD and VHS version.

On the bright side for me is I've found loads of stuff in the cardboard boxes that I'd forgotten I'd had and one or two things I haven't even seen.
I'll keep on looking

Sorry

In that case the HD DVD had better have a TrueHD track or there will be trouble!
